Hello. It's Dongo for CNET.com and today, I have another solid state drive to show you, the Vertex 4 from OCZ. Now, this is a standard SSD that is 9.5mm thick which mean it's gonna fit in any application where standard hard drive like this ones is used. Now, the Vertex 4 actually very different from the Vextex 3 which use the popular SandForce controller. The new drive here uses OCZ homegrown controller that Indilinx Everest 2. This controller was first introduced with the (??) last year. Now the 2nd generation is about to offer faster performance and high IOPS but don't worry about a controller IOPS. When it comes to solid state drive, there's 2 things you want to know about, the performance and the price. The new drive here actually offer both. In my testing it was really fast, not the fastest but close. Price-wise, the new drive cost around $1.3-1.4 per gig. To make it even a better deal, OCZ also include this bay adapter to make the drive fit inside a desktop computer easily and the screws are also included. And for those who wanna show up the SSD which they should, there's also this sticker right here that reads My SSD is faster than your hard drive which is another way to say, I'm sexy and I know which I am and I do and I work out soon. The good: The SATA 3 (6Gbps) 2.5-inch OCZ Vertex 4 is fast and affordable and comes with a tray adapter so it can also fit in a 3.5-inch drive bay.
The bad: The OCZ Vertex 4 isn't thin enough to be used in an ultrabook.
The bottom line: The OCZ Vertex 4 is an excellent replacement drive for a standard-size laptop or desktop.
