>> Hey I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital audio and MP3 and today we're taking a First Look at the Numark iDJ2. Lots of DJs are trading-in their record crates for laptops these days. A laptop DJ rigs can be expensive, fragile and complicated to set up. You have to invest in the computer, DJ software, professional sound cards and a functional midi-controller. Numark's iDJ2 offers a third option, letting you use an iPod or a USB drive as your music library and rapping a DJ mixer, software and audio card all into one relatively affordable package priced at around $500. The iDJ2 offers all the basic controls of a two-deck DJ system including independent game, EQ and pitch setting for each deck along with playback controls, jog wheels for scratching and searching through tracks and a crossfade with an adjustable soft setting. On the front you will find a microphone input, headphone output and cue mix control for previewing your mix. On the back of the system, you've got balanced XLR outputs, which are pretty rare on the system this affordable, along with RCA outs, line and phono inputs. There's also an S-video connection for running video from your iPod and two USB ports that can be either used to host USB drives or you can also plug in an optional keyboard and click the search through your music collection using the keyboard. The centerpiece of the iDJ2 is a 4.25-inch color LCD screen that is literally at the center of the unit. Using the screen you can sort through your collection by track, album, artist, genre, BPM, year, playlist or even a folder tree. The screen also will see dive into advanced settings and offers a simplified view of each track's wav form. Illuminated by under the screen, lets you flip through different settings and assign tracks to either of the two decks. All in all the Numark iDJ2 is a great value and very easy to use even for first time DJs. It's not idiot-proof however; this isn't the instant DJ machine. You still need to have decent taste in music and ear for matching beats manually. I'm Donald Bell and that was a First Look at the Numark iDJ2. ^M00:02:00 [ Music ]

Numark iDJ2 Mixing Console for iPod Review

The good: The Numark iDJ2 provides a professional, one-stop solution for DJing with an iPod MP3 player or USB drive. Features such as XLR output, video output, a built-in color screen, and multiple pitch-control modes can't be found in comparable products at this price.

The bad: The Numark iDJ2's plastic construction doesn't inspire confidence, there's no support for protected-AAC files, and there are no built-in effects.

The bottom line: Rockstar DJs may sneer at the Numark iDJ2's simplicity and iPod novelty, but work-a-day event DJs will appreciate the system's efficiency, keyboard search, sound quality, and portability.
