>> Hi, I'm Bonnie Cha, Senior Editor at cnnet.com, and today we're taking a first look at the Nokia N96.This Smartphone made its debut at the GSMA trade show in Spain, almost about a year ago, but you can now buy it unlocked here in the U.S. Smartphone is an update to the popular Nokia N95, but not a significant one in my opinion. First the N96 keeps the overall design of the N95 but it has rounder edges and a sleeker face here. The display isn't non touch, but it does have a built in accelerometer, so the screen orientation will change from portrait to landscape mode when you rotate the phone. You still get the dual slider design, so when you push the screen up, you get access to the alphanumeric keypad for dialing and texting and if you push the screen down, you get dedicated media player keys for music and video. On back, you'll find a 5 megapixel camera and flash and you now get this little kickstand so you can place the phone on a flat service and watch videos on the phone. And speaking of video and camera, multi-media features are the big draw of the Nokia N96. The Smartphone camera takes excellent pictures and it can record and play back video at up to 30 frames per second. Also has a robust media player and the good news is that the N96 has an amazing amount of internal memory - 16 gigabytes of internal memory - which you can expand with a micro SD card slide - it accepts up to 8 gigabyte cards so you're looking at about 24 gigabytes there. This all means that you get a whole lot of storage for your music, videos, photos and other files. The N96 can also do more than multi media; it has a full productivity suite - email, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G support. There are plenty of voice features too, including a speaker phone and voice dialing. Overall call quality was pretty good. We had no problems having conversations with friends and families and I didn't experience any dropped calls during our testing. As I said earlier, the Nokia N96 is available for purchase as an unlocked phone which you can use with an AT&T or a T-Mobile SIM card. But the bad news is it'll cost you $776. Despite all the features and extra memory, I don't think it's really worth the upgrade if you already have an N95 and I think a lot of people are waiting for the new Nokia N97, so it just kind of seems like an afterthought at this point. The Nokia N82 has some annoying design flaws and lacks 3G support, but our lasting impression of the N82 is of a powerful multimedia smartphone with excellent imaging capabilities and solid performance.
The Nokia E61i isn't a major upgrade, bringing some minor design improvements and the addition of a camera, but it still remains a powerful smart phone for business users; just be prepared to pay a price.
Though it won't appeal to the masses quite yet, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a nice, portable device for on-the-go Web browsing, and it has some worthy upgrades.
As with all Nokia N series smartphones, the Nokia N78 impresses with its high-end features, especially the new geotagging tool, but we were slightly disappointed by the spotty call quality.
Mobile professionals who need a powerful but sleek messaging-centric smartphone will be well-served by the Nokia E71; just be prepared to pay a price.
The Nokia N79 might not be the star of the N series devices, but it still shines as a great multimedia smartphone with plenty of features and fast performance.
While the Nokia N97 is packed with features and offers the freedom of an unlocked phone, its clunky touch interface, sky-high price tag, and outdated operating system make it hard to recommend when there are better touch-screen smartphones on the market.
The Nokia E61 certainly isn't for everyone, but with its powerful productivity apps, connectivity options, and good call quality, the smart phone will make a good addition to a corporate user's arsenal.
Affordably priced, the Nokia E71x for AT&T is an incredible value for business users and consumers looking for a robust messaging smartphone.
The Nokia 7390 is a lovely cell phone from Nokia's L'Amour design collection. It's not optimized for U.S. cellular networks, but it's impressive just the same.
Nokia N96 (unlocked) Review
The good: The Nokia N96 features 16GB of storage and advanced multimedia features, including a 5-megapixel camera. The smartphone also has integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 3G support.
The bad: The N96 froze on a couple of occasions and can sometimes be sluggish. Nokia's Ovi services aren't fully activated in North America, so you can't take advantage of those extra capabilities. It's also expensive.
The bottom line: Though the Nokia N96 is a powerful all-in-one smartphone with an impressive amount of user storage, it's not a significant upgrade to the N95 and is outdone by new devices coming to market, including the Nokia N97.
