>> Hi, I'm Bonnie Cha, senior editor at CNET.com, and today we are taking a First Look at the Nokia N85. This phone is somewhat similar to the N96 and the N95 in terms of design. It has a dual-slider design, so if you slide it up, you've got a nice little alphanumeric keypad here for texting and dialing. It's pretty easy to use. The keys are pretty large here and easy to press. If you slide the screen down, you get controls for the media player, and you can also use this for gaming, which I'll talk about in a little bit. The phone is thinner and smaller than the N96, so that's great. And also, it feels more solid, which was one of my complaints about the N96. It just felt cheap, but this one feels, like, of a higher quality. And it's got an OLED display, so it's sharper and brighter. I noticed a bit of a difference when comparing the two. Down here, you've got some controls. You've got, you know, you're typical talk and end keys, as well as some shortcut keys. But they're pretty stiff to press, so I found it a little bit difficult to navigate the phone, as well as using for gaming. In terms of features, like I said, gaming is one of the highlights of the phone. You can go to Nokia's Engage gaming platform and download games and interact with other users as well. You know, it's not gonna replace your PSP, but if, you know, you're board at the bus stop or something like that, it'll be a nice stand-in. It has a pretty robust media player that supports various music formats as well as video. Video looks really nice on the screen here. Also has a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and it took really nice photos, I thought. It has a flash, so that helps as well. Overall, the phone quality was pretty good, and the N85 is a little bit less than the Nokia N96 and the N95, and I think it provides a better value. You lose a little bit in internal memory, but again, I think you get more for your money with this device. It's available unlocked for around $490.00 online. Nokia N85 copper (unlocked) Review
The good: The Nokia N85 features a sleeker design and more solid construction than the N96 and N95. The smartphone also offers full wireless options as well as a 5-megapixel camera, a decent music player, and gaming support.
The bad: The N85's can be sluggish at times, particularly when viewing photos. Some navigation controls are stiff and difficult to use. The smartphone is also expensive and the Nokia Music Store hasn't fully launched in the United States.
The bottom line: The Nokia N85 may not offer as much memory as the N95 or N96, but it offers just as many features and a sleeker design, making it a better value in our book.
