New Opera blazes onto Mac Video Transcript
>> Seth Rosenblatt: For those who like living on the browsing edge, Opera's browser is quite possibly the fastest for the Mac. Even if you've been skeptical of Opera in the past, the speed alone makes this a must see. Hi. I'm Seth Rosenblatt for CNET download dot com. In this first look video, I'll be showing you Opera 10.52, the first stable version of Opera for the Mac that uses the new Carakan JavaScript engine. Opera for the Mac lacks some of the visual pop that the Windows version has, but the new Mac version has been completely rebuilt in Coco. Buttons such as the tabs list and the Opera tools at the bottom now look similar to the Windows version. This should help anybody moving to a Mac. Besides Carakan, which Opera claims is ten times faster than the previous Mac version, the browser comes with better hooks to Mac-only features. There's growl and multi-touch track pad support, support for some HDML5, including the video tag, and Opera widgets will finally work on the desktop independent of the browser. This means that widgets can be used as standalone apps, previously limited to the Windows version. Opera Turbo makes dial-up browsing significantly faster while Opera unite in its deep feature set for file sharing and streaming are now available to Mac users. The multi-touch track pad support means you can now take advantage of pinch to zoom, two-finger swipe to scroll, and three-finger swipe to navigate your browser history. Smooth scrolling is now enabled by default. Notably, Opera is compatible with old Macs. Unlike many competitors, this version will work on legacy power PC machines. The browser will also run on OSX 10.4 tiger. So what makes this latest version of Opera more impressive than Safari or Firefox for the Mac? Well, with the new Opera mini browser for the iPhone, you can sync your bookmarks, tabs, and history wirelessly and for free via the Opera link service. Opera may have a long way to go to raise its visibility, but it's combination of speed and built-in services make it one of the best browsers around for Macs. With a first look at Opera 10.52, I'm Seth Rosenblatt for download dot com. [ Music ]
