Mozilla Thunderbird 5 Video
Mozilla Thunderbird 5 Video Transcript
If you hate Outlook or you want a desktop e-mail program, Thunderbird is probably the e-mail beast you're looking for. On the one hand, it's faster and lighter on your system than Outlook. It's a very basic program with fairly zippy account setup and import tools and workflows baked in for the major webmail competitors. Adding your Gmail account, for example, will take less than 5 minutes. Just as in your browser, tabs help you manage multiple conversations at the same time. It does come with some smart features, such as e-mail tags for staying organized, a redonkulously robust search and Mozilla's key to the kingdom Add-Ons. There are thousands of Add-Ons so you can really customize how you manage your e-mail. Lightning adds calendar support, Conversation View does a very cool job of replicating Gmail's threaded e-mail conversations, Enigmail adds PGP key support to enhance your security. On the other hand, sometimes Thunderbird seems like its best feature is that it's not Outlook. The dead space up top kills me, even with its useful buttons and powerful search filter and it's confusing having 3 different places to start a search from. Thunderbird Search, by the way, seriously will amaze you if you're sick of Outlook's weak sauce. But still, that doesn't change that it really could be better designed. Also, certain add-ons such as the essential for most people, Lightning Calendar, must get easier to set up. Overall, Thunderbird is a great tool for those who are willing to spend a little bit of time getting to know it. If you're looking for desktop e-mail support and can't stand Outlook, really you've got to give it a shot. And that's your first look at Mozilla Thunderbird. For CNET, I'm Seth Rosenblatt.
