>> Hi. I'm Kent German. I'm Senior Editor at CNET.com. I cover cell phones, so I'm here of course at CES 2009. I wanna show you one of a new phone from Motorola it's called the Motorola Surf A3100. This is a Windows Mobile smartphone, comes in a really nice design. I like the curve shape here at the top, here at the bottom, really curvaceous, nice slick like the Chrome styling here in the side, black color schemes, so really a great design in that sense. Now, this is a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone and as anyone has used Windows Mobile you know that it can be a little hard to use. It can be a little hard to find things, not the most user friendly system in a lot in a way, but Motorola has made a change to that. They've allowed you to use a customizable user interface where you can put little icons on and you could just make it a little more user friendly. So you can use your finger, you can use this trackball here. This is Motorola's first phone of the trackball, so it's really nice. It feels great on the finger, it rolls right over there or you can take out the stylus here, here on the side and -- oops got the phone dial over there. And you can go back and forth and the screen will change like that. So you can see the main menu here, there's a bunch of icons. You can customize this, you can put on which icons you want, which ones you don't. You can keep going back and forth and when you get to the dialing menu -- if I can get there. You can use people's photos where you can take a photo of them and you can use this as your favorite contacts. So, pretty cool on that sense. That's that the screen right there. No photos there, but you can take a photo of someone. Has a 3 megapixel camera. You can hear or you see it here on the back. Also has a -- also there's a small flash. One thing I like about this phone is it does have a 3.5 millimeter headset jack, really a fan of that because it allows you to use your own headset. You don't have to use whatever comes in the box and you don't even have to fumble with an adapter or anything like that. So, really a great system in that sense. Does have Talk and End buttons down here of course, has messaging, e-mail, everything you'd expect in a Windows Mobile phone. Does have a -- also has an onscreen keyboard, might have to -- might have to get there, but there you can see the -- there you can see the QWERTY keyboard, so it's pretty spacious. Not enough if you use your finger I think. I tried to get in there and use it a little bit. I have pretty big fingers, so pretty fumbling around with it, but the stylus is great that it does allow you to type the messages relatively quickly. It doesn't have an accelerometer in the sense that it won't rotate the phone automatically when you turn the phone like you've seen in other phones like the iPhone of course. But if you press this key and you've go like that and then you rotate the phone you can see that the screen changes, so, pretty cool on that sense. Others things that this have, it has speaker phone, it has all the personal organizer features you might expect, has stereo Bluetooth, as just the GPS. It is -- will be out the first quarter of this year. No U.S. carrier plans. It will be out in Asia probably China first and it does have handwriting diction for Chinese characters, so we will see this in Asia. May not see it in the U.S. for a while, but you can always buy it unlocked at typically Motorola's online store. So I'm Kent German and this is the Motorola Surf A3100. ^M00:02:50 [ Music ]
