>> Hi I'm Kent German, Senior Editor here at cnet.com. Today we take a First Look at the Motorola Hint QA30. This is a phone that's out for Cricket Wireless and also out from Alltel. What we have here is a texting phone, not a Smart phone so it doesn't have any kind of Blackberry operating system or anything like that. It's really just geared toward texting. You can get POP3 e-mail on there so that's Yahoo, Hot Mail; but you won't be able to get Outlook sync or anything like that, really just a phone for basic communication. You can see when in a closed position, the phone is almost square. The back cover has a little bit of a circular design around it, just a little bit of a stylish touch. One thing I didn't like though and this might be just the phone that we have here, is I really couldn't get the back cover to stay on completely. It popped off pretty easily, every time I tried to slide it down on the slots there is always one corner that just wouldn't go down. So as I said it could be our phone so but I definitely tried it for about a half an hour and couldn't get it to stay; so you're definitely want to look at that and see if the back cover is sticking on fully. The display is pretty nice; it is pretty large considering the phone's overall size; pretty bright and colorful, vibrant, shows graphics well. Navigation controls--only the OK button in the middle is really tactile. Still we didn't have any problems getting a finger in there and moving around menus. A couple of soft keys--these were a bit small, also the talk and end buttons were just a little too narrow in my opinion. I felt with all this space they could have made better use of it, could have enlarged the buttons just a bit, especially people with larger hands like me. Slider mechanism feels pretty nice. Just go up like that and you expose the whole keyboard. Wasn't so impressed with the keypad, but personally I had a problem texting on this phone. Just felt it was too crowded, things were too squashed together. Pretty good assortment of keys as far as the number goes, but like I said pretty squashed together and pretty uncomfortable in my opinion. Inside the phone beyond the texting, you'll find the 2 megapixel camera as I said, you'll find a music player, personal organizer, speakerphone; really just a phone for basic communication. Motorola Hint QA30 (MetroPCS) Review
The good: The Motorola Hint QA30 offers a high-resolution display, threaded text messaging, and stereo Bluetooth. We also like the 3.5mm headset jack and the functional music player.
The bad: The Motorola Hint QA30 has poorly designed controls and the alphabetic keyboard was difficult to use. The battery cover wasn't secure.
The bottom line: The Motorola Hint QA30 seems like a good idea, but some major design concerns keep it from being a top messaging phone.
