>> Hi. I'm Bonnie Cha, Senior Editor at CNET.com, and today we've got a very special First Look at the Motorola CLIQ, which is their first Android device. Start with the design first, it's very nice and compact, and it has a really solid build. I actually think it's a very high quality built phone. In front, you've got a 3.1-inch HVGA screen that's pretty bright and clear, and you've got these controls down here as well. It does slide out to have a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as this keypad over here. I have to say, I really love the keyboard. It's probably one of the best I've used, really nice, rounded buttons. It has a nice, tactile feel. Phone also has a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, which we always love. On the side here, you've got a volume control as well. So a micro-USB port. On the right side here, you've got a camera button, which is nice, and also a power that will lock the screen as well as bring up a connection manager. What really makes this phone special is something called Motorola Blur. This is software that Motorola's added. And what it does, it merges all your contact information from different sources like Facebook and Twitter and MySpace, brings it all together into one contact view, and then also streams all your updates to the home screen, so you're -- it's constantly updating to show your friends Facebook updates or Twitter, which is really nice, but it can also be a little bit overwhelming I think, but you can customize the home screen to show what you would like. Other features of it, it is also, obviously, running Google Android, so you get services like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Voice. It also has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and supports T-Mobile's 3G network. Lots of great features on this way. Has [inaudible] pixel camera, a very cool feature, like I said, but they are targeting it towards a little bit of a younger audience who would really use social networking sites a lot. It will be available from T-Mobile in the fall. They haven't announced pricing, but I'm really looking forward to checking out the new Android device from Motorola, and I'm Bonnie Cha. This has been your First Look at the Motorola CLIQ. ^M00:02:04 [ Music ]

Motorola Cliq - titanium (T-Mobile) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Motorola Cliq has a great design with a brilliant display and easy-to-use controls and keyboard. Its feature set is rich and functional, and Motorola made some welcome improvements and user interface tweaks.

The bad: The Motorola Cliq lacks a file manager, a camera flash, and some basic organizer features. You can store apps only on the integrated memory, and the memory card slot is stashed behind the battery cover. Call quality wasn't perfect and the handset was occasionally sluggish.

The bottom line: With its excellent design, user interface improvements, and admirable feature set, the Motorola Cliq gives a big boost to the Android operating system. We had some performance quibbles with the device, and the MotoBlur interface can be a bit much, but the phone has a lot to like.
