Motorola Cliq 2 (T-Mobile) Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Kent German, senior editor at cnet.com. Today, we'll take a first look at the Motorola CLIQ 2. This is a new phone for T-Mobile. It is an update to the original CLIQ, of course, since then we've seen the CLIQ XT, which was a touchscreen-only phone, but this actually has keypad. This is a little bit bigger than the original CLIQ as far as this taller a little wider. You can see I can hold the original CLIQ here you can see there's a bit of a comparison. It is thinner, though. It just has a slimmer more or dynamic feeling in the hand. I do like the textured back cover kind of these lines on it, a little bit rubber-- a little bit of that soft-touch material. So it feels very comfortable. It feels like it won't slide around a lot. It does have the keypad as I said, so you turn the phone on its side. The buttons have a nice rubberized feeling. When I was typing with them, they felt very solid beneath the finger, but I didn't have to apply a lot of pressure and just had a comfortable feel. I do like the display. It's really bright; it's really colorful; great resolution. It's also very big. We're seeing a lot of the phones get above 4 inches as far as touchscreens go. Of course, there's big debate about what's too big, but I think this is fine. It's perfectly-- perfectly usable and then as I said the phone isn't too big in the pocket, so I don't think there is any problem with portability. The CLIQ 2 is running Froyo such Android 2.2, so it's pretty up-to-date. It doesn't have gingerbread. We'll get it at some point. We don't know quite when. It does have 7 homescreen, so as with any Android phone, you can populate them as you want. It does run MotoBlur. You are required to use-- sign up for MotoBlur to use the phone. So hopefully, Motorola changes that at some point. Inside the phone is everything you'd expect. It does have messaging and of course it has e-mail; you got the web browser; all the normal Android functions and Google applications; you have Google Map; you have Google Talk and Google Voice. A moderately powerful smartphone. It's not quite as high-end as maybe Motorola's ATRIX, but still, I think, it's a good phone. If you like the CLIQ, you'll probably like this. Just in a much more attractive design and it's a little slimmer and with a much better display as well. I'm Kent German and this is the Motorola CLIQ 2 for T-Mobile.

Motorola Cliq 2 (T-Mobile) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Motorola Cliq 2 offers a terrific keyboard, a fair number of features, and a vibrant display. Call quality and multimedia performance are satisfying.

The bad: The Motorola Cliq 2 traps its memory card slot behind the battery cover. The volume level for standard voice calls could be louder, and the Motoblur interface won't be for everyone.

The bottom line: The Motorola Cliq 2 delivers a usable design and agreeable performance, but we were hoping for more feature improvements over its Cliq predecessors.
