>>Hey everyone I'm Molly Wood. Welcome to the holiday help desk 2.0. It's not a day long marathon. It's a month long marathon.
>>Brian: Oh yeah, we're ready for it.
>>Molly: Don't think that we're working any less. We are doing this show everyday for the next half hour so we're going to be taking your calls, reading your emails, we're going to be talking of course to our expert deal finders. We have Rick Broida from the Cheapskate blog. We have Michael Brim of BF Ads.
>>Brian: Not beef ads?
>>Molly: Not beef ads, no, BF ads.
>>Brian: Okay, I wanted to make sure.
>>Molly: Dot net and he's got a preview of what we expect from the black Friday sales. We are doing it up, holiday help desk style.
>>Brian: We also have our shopper.com representative in house, Tristan Reinhart. Tristan, so we'll be talking with him in a little bit and just to let you know, this is how number two.
>>Molly: Yeah, show number two of many, right?
>>Brian: Two of 22, we will be here for a while.
>>Molly: I just do many cause I don't even want to think about 22 shows.
>>Brian: This is great. Also you'll see Cooley, Brian Cooley. Tom Merritt will also be rotating in and out and we'll be going until December 23 so if you're familiar with our 10 hour to 12 hour marathon that we used to have on Black Friday, we're actually gonna get Black Friday off, thank goodness.
>>Molly: Thank goodness.
>>Brian: That's a nice thing they did for us.
>>Molly: I know. I appreciate that. We will have a two hour live special on Cyber Monday so you won't want to miss that. It's all, you know it's everyday this time, 1:00 pm Pacific, 4:00 pm Eastern. If you didn't catch the live stream today, catch it again tomorrow. We'll be here. And there are of course many ways to reach us and to get your questions to us. You can call us at 1-888-900-CNET, CNET, 2638. Why didn't Brian Tong do this? I'm not the one who did CNET live.
>>Brian: 1-888-900
>>Molly: See, 888-900-CNET
>>Brian: 2638
>>Molly: You can email us at holidayhelpdesk@cnet.com and then of course there's our chat room at cnet.com/live/holidayhelpdesk. So we decided this is the way to do it. We think we can reach more people and you know we can do your questions.
>>Brian: And to make sure you guys stick around obviously, we're bringing you prizes like really good, you want the free prizes. So what we have here, everyday you have the chance to enter a holiday giveaway. You want to go check out our website at crave.cnet.com and look for the giveaway posting. If you look right now, today's prize is the Sony Bravia KDL32L5000. If you don't know what that is, that's a Sony 32 inch TV. It ranges for around $500. We have over 3,000 entries, as of now.
>>Molly: Oh my goodness, of course we do because who would not want to win a television? Like that's a big chunk of your shopping pretty much done.
>>Brian: So you guys have until now until 4:00 am pacific, 7:00 am eastern time to enter. We'll do the drawing and what is it? Yeah, tomorrows show we'll announce the winner.
>>Molly: Tomorrow's show, yeah, yesterday in fact we gave away an iPod Nano. Later on in the show we'll be telling you who won that one.
>>Brian: We're gonna tell you at the end cause we want you guys
>>Molly: Cause we want you to stay here and we want you to stay here so that you can hear all of our great advice and of course our shopping deals. We could not do this alone. Every single show we're going to be checking in with a long list of some of the best retailers on the web. You know these guys, Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, Circuit City, Tiger Direct
>>Brian: All of them
>>Molly: And the person who helped us book all these people or the people, one of them, Tristan Reinhart from Shopper.com. Thank you so much for joining us. So for one thing, tell us a little bit about shopper.com. It's a CNET sister site. Not everyone may know that.
>>Tristan: It's CNET's sister shopping site that has coupons, deals, bargains, certified merchants, top 100 and we build up the deal blog everyday, by ourselves so you won't find the same blog anywhere else on the internet. We do all the research. We do all the leg work. So you can just go to shopper.com and see the newest deals everyday.
>>Molly: So I know shopper.com is pretty well known as like a price comparison engine, a place that you can go and find prices from a bunch of different retailers but you're also negotiation sweet deals on electronics,
>>Tristan: We not only
>>Molly: That's how you have to say that by the way, sweet deals
>>Tristan: Sweet deals
>>Brian: Good Tristan, more falsetto
>>Molly: Nice, you are hired. [laughter]
>>Tristan: Thanks, I practice.
>>Brian: Sweet
>>Molly: So negotiating great deals of course and you're working with retailers, right? People can trust shopper.com?
>>Brian: That's what makes it different, right?
>>Tristan: Well you can trust us and you also know we're doing the math behind all the deals so we know when prices drop, we know by how much and we know which ones are important to put on our blog.
>>Molly: So you got some good ones for us today?
>>Tristan: Well I was just looking, [laughter] I noticed
>>Brian: You just happened to be looking.
>>Molly: Come to think of it.
>>Tristan: I noticed that we have the Logitech one harmony or harmony one
>>Molly: Oh really
>>Brian: The remote, right?
>>Tristan: That's something I've been wanting a long time. It's supposed to work really well. It got editor's choice last year. I think that's the one I'm going to be checking out.
>>Brian: So are you telling our viewers that maybe they should check it out too? Hint, hint
>>Tristan: I'm telling you that if you're not sure what to get your loved one for this holiday and they don't have a really kick butt [laughter] remote, at least consider it.
>>Molly: You pretty much can't go -- yeah, Logitech
>>Brian: I have one of Logitech's Universal remotes
>>Molly: I know, oh really? Shopper.com, hello
>>Brian: It's always one of our highest rated remotes, you know across all the lines and models from Logitech so that's a good deal
>>Molly: That's good stuff. Alright thank you very much, obviously, for joining us. We're going to get to some more deals. We have CNET's very own cheapskate blogger, Rick Broida, talk about a sleuth for deals
>>Brian: This guys cheap.
>>Molly: This guy is cheap.
>>Brian: He's so cheap
>>Molly: Welcome to the show.
>>Brian: We love cheap people.
>>Molly: We love him and look at his nice house.
>>Brian: Look at that colored sweater that he has on. That looks very comfortable.
>>Molly: Rick's joining us from Michigan. I mean you could not be more stylish up in here today. [laughter] Did you get great deals on that
>>Rick: And it's cheap too
>>Molly: I was gonna say. You got great deals on that paint and furniture didn't you?
>>Rick: You know I did. [laughter]
>>Molly: So what, you got some great deals for us today?
>>Rick: I got a great deal trifecta.
>>Brian: Ooh the triple play
>>Rick: Yes I couldn't narrow it down to just one because there were so many, you know, great deals trickling in this week, not trickling in, they're flooding in. And the first was a 24 inch LCD monitor for $159.99 which is about as low as I've ever seen for a monitor of that size.
>>Molly: Wow
>>Rick: Yeah, very nice, very nice. I was a little tempted to pull the trigger on that one myself. Next up we have a Kodak ZI6 HD pocket camcorder.
>>Brian: These are popular
>>Rick: These used to sell for about $179 and even upwards of $200 and it's on sale today from $99 bucks from Amazon, so that is really killer and both products are new. They're not refurbished. A lot of times the really cheapo deals are refurbs. This is new gear.
>>Molly: $99? It is a good thing that I didn't bring my credit card to the show cause that -- I would just be like, let's go to a break, click, click.
>>Brian: Also with that camera, a lot of people when they think of many handheld cameras they think of Flip video
>>Molly: Right
>>Brian: But actually Kodak has continued to kind of beat them to the punch with HD video and HCMI connector directly on the device so this is a killer deal.
>>Molly: That is a really great price. And actually Rick, I've gotta tell you. I owe you like $50 bucks because I waited for your Droid deal to come out so I could get the Droid for $150 instead of paying $199 so when you come to town, dinners on me.
>>Rick: I accept cash, check, PayPal, you name it. I'll collect on that.
>>Brian: Hey now Rick, are you seeing, it's still early, Black Friday hasn't hit yet but are the deals getting better and better as time is going on or is it about the same from about a week ago?
>>Rick: You know what's interesting about Black Friday this year and I think the same is true of last year is that, there are some awesome deals all year round so I think it's really challenging for a lot of retailers and e-tailers to come up with anything that's really super sexy. Now that being said there are certainly some nice deals starting to -- I mean as we've seen today with these three, I didn't even mention the Blue-Ray player but there's definitely some good stuff popping up this week. I would advise people to look sharp all week long, not just on Friday but the last few days leading up to Friday cause there is some good stuff coming up.
>>Molly: So you're a believer cause I feel like there's always been this question about whether Black Friday really does have the good deals or whether it's stuff that was maybe a little bit overpriced the rest of the year and then they could afford to discount it. You think these are actually, I mean $99 bucks for that camera, $159 bucks for that monitor, that actually, that sounds like legitimate sales.
>>Rick: Right and this is happy Tuesday [laughter] so there's nothing, you don't have to wait till Friday to get this deal. And as I've said, I've seen Blue-Ray players as low as like you know $80 bucks months ago so I haven't seen anything quite like that lined up for Black Friday. So you know there are great deals no question coming up on Friday but you want to kind of just pay attention to what some of the pricing has been and see if you're really getting the super sweet deal
>>Brian: Sweet deal
>>Molly: Nice, it's a thing. Alright you can catch all of Rick's deals all the time at CNET.com/cheapskate so if you want to keep an eye on those deals all week long, that's where you find them.
>>Brian: Yeah and before we jump we're gonna head up some calls. We just want to talk about that Blue-Ray player really quick. It's an LG Blue-Ray player, $94. I mean it's an LG brand. It's a quality brand.
>>Molly: That's serious stuff, yeah
>>Brian: It doesn't have any of the streaming like Netflix and what not but it does, you know, $94
>>Molly: I mean considering that these things were $300, $400 you know just a month ago
>>Brian: Oh yeah, oh yeah
>>Molly: That is remarkable
>>Brian: Okay, alright, let's jump to the calls. Let's go to Jake in Detroit. Jake, how you doin?
>>Molly: Hello, are you there?
>>Brian: Jake
>>Which line do you want me to hit?
>>Molly: Oh I got it. I clicked it. We've got Jake on the line. Are you there, Jake?
>>Brian: This is our first one. Don't hate us. We're workin it.
>>Molly: I didn't think about it either. I was like oh you have to click the button and then Jake will be there.
>>Brian: That works
>>Molly: It's magic. Are you there?
>>Yeah hi
>>Molly: Hi, how's it goin?
>>Fine
>>Molly: So what's your holiday help desk question?
>>I had a question for Brian. I want to buy a laptop for my dad and my two options are Toshiba 8500 at toshibadirect.com or the baseline MacBook for $1,000. The purpose for the laptop is for Autocad. So which one should I buy?
>>Brian: So the thing about, one of the features on the satellite, I'm sorry the Toshiba satellite A500 is the fact that you can kind of customize it a little more. Do you care about even having the ability to have a Blue-Ray player in that laptop?
>>Yeah I do
>>Brian: You do, I'm not trying to distract you from that but if that's an option that you really want, you're only going to be able to do that in the Toshiba A500. You know there are ways to kind of hack and put an external Blu-Ray player on your MacBook to give it more media functionality but it's not internal so that's gonna limit you right there.
>>Molly: The other thing is for Autocad you want a PC. I mean as far as I know there's sort of an Autocad port for the Mac but it doesn't sound like it's very reliable and I think that that Toshiba is going to be more powerful than a baseline MacBook and cheaper. I mean it looks like that's anywhere from $750 to $900
>>Brian: Starting off
>>Molly: And it's definitely gonna run, I think, a lot better, right?
>>Brian: Yeah
>>Molly: I don't know, I'm gonna Toshiba all the way
>>Brian: We would point you in that direction. Obviously the Mac world, would this be your first Mac?
>>Yes, this is my first Mac
>>Brian: Okay so you know there are advantages to that in the whole Apple community but the thing is Autocad, PC, Blue-Ray player, Toshiba A500 so we might direct you in that direction if that's what's really important to you.
>>Molly: Yeah I feel like that's a pretty tricked out. Are you seeing even better prices on that Toshiba, Tristan? I mean either way it looks like its $600
>>Tristan: We don't have pricing for that particular model but I'm also wondering is he gonna need supped up graphics for Autocad?
>>Molly: Probably. The chat room is telling me, I gotta tell you, I do need to put this out there, the chat room is telling me that Autocad on a laptop is a recipe for failure. So you may, I mean you might want to consider whether a laptop is gonna be powerful enough and if you're gonna use a laptop it might have to be much more of a desktop replacement then this one maybe is. [inaudible] Yeah, cause Autocad, that's serious software. Alright I hope that helped you and happy shopping. You know, good luck buddy. Hope your dad likes it.
>>Brian: Okay excellent, now let's jump over to line 2. We have a camcorder question, I believe.
>>Molly: Yeah, I think so. Are you there? Are you there line 2 and that was Nathan?
>>Yeah
>>Molly: Hi
>>Brian: What's up, Nathan?
>>Molly: What's your question for us?
>>Two quick questions, real quick.
>>Molly: Okay
>>I'm getting a laptop for Christmas and I was wondering what the best accessories besides the case would be for it?
>>Brian: Best accessories? What type of stuff do you want to do? Obviously with a laptop it really comes down to what kind of things you want to use it other than just a computer.
>>I mean, internet, a couple, you know basic things. Not like extreme gaming or anything like that.
>>Molly: Right
>>Brian: Well you know obviously it's gonna have Wi-Fi and Ethernet already plugged in there but a lot of people that are mobile on the go, I don't know if this qualifies for you, you know through your specific cell phone carrier, kind of a nice accessory would be to get one of those data cards that allows you to connect to one of those networks, if you really want internet everywhere. That's one thing you might consider. Obviously if there's a contract you have to pay for it, typically around $30 a month to cover that data but if that's one of your priorities that might be something you want to look at.
>>Molly: Yeah you read my mind on that one I think
>>Brian: I do read your mind
>>Molly: He's totally is like in there.
>>Brian: I'm like a mentalist.
>>Molly: That's a great way to add to your laptop and make it more useful everywhere and then you know honestly I feel you can't go wrong with just like a mouse.
>>Tristan: Yeah I was gonna say a mouse. These kind of mouse are crippling
>>Molly: A portable mouse. They are. They hurt your hand. You just can't be like, if you have that little think pad nub, I mean you will come out looking like that woman from Pet Cemetery, Zelda.
>>Brian: You don't want the magic mouse and I just said that
>>Molly: Oh no, you do not
>>Brian: It's not magical at all
>>Molly: Another thing, you know if it doesn't have a built in webcam, I think you can go that route and you can always go, I mean laptops don't have huge hard drives so an external hard drive is always a good option too. I just bought like a terabyte external hard drive, not a network attach storage, true but it was $99.
>>Brian: So Nathan, what was your other question?
>>I'm not sure when the best time to get a sweet deal on the iPod Nano or iPod touch would be.
>>Brian: Okay well Molly do you want to, we could throw this around but you just got a little email in.
>>Molly: I'm thinkin, Friday.
>>Brian: Maybe Black Friday
>>Molly: Friday, yeah I just got the email from Apple today and it's like, oh it's almost time for our Friday thing. And they don't tell you necessarily what it's gonna be in advance. You know if you go to apple.com/store right now they're kind of saying, one day shopping on Friday.
>>Brian: Yeah, Nathan I can tell you that at least there were some leaks of the early flyers of what Apple's gonna actually release. Nano's and iPods are looking around 10 percent off of those models so I think for the $199 iPod touch, it's $21 off of that. Also with MacBooks and Imax you're getting around a 10 percent, 5 percent discount. That's simply what they've always done on Black Friday. They're not gonna do anything aggressive. It's Apple. You're even lucky they're gonna give you 5 percent off but
>>Molly: I bought one of those 10 percent iPod Nano's last year on Black Friday though. I mean that's the only time you're ever gonna get a break on Apple so
>>Brian: Oh yeah
>>Molly: Do it on Friday. Alright we are getting
>>Is that online only?
>>Brian: I believe it's in store. I don't know if it's online. You'll have to check.
>>Molly: I bought it online so it's definitely online and it may also be in store.
>>You bought it online at apple?
>>Molly: Yeah at apple.com/store is where I bought it on the Black Friday sale.
>>Is it just them or do they let their retailers have the
>>Molly: I don't know. It's a little confusing
>>Brian: The sales that we mentioned are specifically for Apple. Retail stores
>>Molly: Right, retail stores may have other discounts. Alright, we have got to take a break. People are literally jumping up and down [laughter] starting at us, tell us that if we don't
>>Brian: You should see a live shot now, ahhh
>>Molly: If we don't take a break we are dead now so we are going to go do that and then we'll have much more deals and calls coming up next.
>>Brian: Okay [music]
>>[background music] If you think all batteries are the same, consider this. These Duracell batteries were given to the Mattel Children's Hospital, UCLA because when it comes to kids and healing, you're not just powering a toy, you're powering a smile. Duracell, trusted everywhere.
>>Everywhere you look new gadgets are popping up. To get the real story on them, there's really only one place to go, CNET.com. Discover something new at CNET.

>>Molly: Welcome back everybody. The phones lines are open, 888-900-CNET, C-N-E-T, 2638. In fact I think they're pretty full. I think we should just
>>Brian: Should we maybe take more calls.
>>Molly: Keep this train rolling. Take some more calls, yeah.
>>Brian: Alright let's go to Jamie, which is line 4, Jamie?
>>Molly: Jamie, are you there? I clicked the button. Are you there, Jamie?
>>Hello
>>Molly: Hey, how's it going? What's your question for the holiday help desk?
>>Well I was wondering, because I haven't got a [inaudible] on which one to get, the iPhone 3GS or the HTC HD2?
>>Brian: Uh huh, now one thing right off the bat is I believe the HTC HD2 is an unlocked phone, which you know, sure you can gel break your iPhone and make it more versatile that way but it's been shown recently that's been a little more susceptible to attacks through worms. So do you need or care about the unlock ability because that right there automatically opens up some flexibility?
>>No because they're both [inaudible]
>>Molly: I was gonna say they're both gonna be unlocked. The only difficulty I think Brian is saying you might run into with the unlocked iPhone honestly is that people are not writing viruses for unlocked iPhone's that make them slightly more dangerous so there's that to consider. I mean how, I guess here's my question to you, how kind of geeky do you consider yourself because I feel like at this point, any Smartphone that's not an iPhone is like a little more work. You know I think you have to be a little more adventurous.
>>I'd say I'm a bit more adventurous
>>Brian: You like adventure
>>Molly: You sound like the kind of guy to me that doesn't just want to kind of go with the flow and be like another iPhone guy. [laughter]
>>Brian: Are you stereotyping iPhone users?
>>Molly: I'm just saying there's a lot of them out there and the HTC HD2, these look like very cool phones. It's gonna have a 1 gigahertz mobile processor so more powerful than the iPhone.
>>Brian: One thing also is the ACC screen is a HD resolution. It's a larger screen. I believe it's a 4.3 inch screen. And so media playback is gonna look good on both of these phones, it's gonna look great on both of these phones, you know, if you're a commuter I know media playback for me is a big deal.
>>Molly: What do you want to do with your Smartphone? What are you kind of hoping to get out of it?
>>Mostly internet access because my phone at the moment doesn't have anything right now. [inaudible] all that sort of stuff
>>Molly: Yeah you just want a better kind of phone experience. I mean to me I feel like if they're both unlocked and they're both available, I think the HTC just sounds kind of exciting. Five megapixel camera, it's just got, you know, a couple of little extra features that put it over the iPhone and it's something new.
>>Brian: The touch flow interface is really nice, especially with the faster processor. A lot of early phones with the touch flow interface were slow and funky but on the HTC HD2 it's gonna a lot better so that's another advantage.
>>Molly: Yep, I'm gonna say, be bold and go for it.
>>Brian: Alright Jamie, thank you
>>Molly: Good luck. I hope that helps you. And we are ready to go to one of our guests. We have an interviewer, we have an interviewer? What on earth
>>Brian: You are the interviewer
>>Molly: I'm the interviewer. [laughter] It's me
>>Brian: Amazing
>>Molly: I can do this. We have Michael Brim on the line from bfads.net. Hi Michael
>>Brian: Michael, what's up?
>>How's it going?
>>Molly: So bfads.net, a site devoted to Black Friday deals. Now since your Skype connection is a little bit touchy right now, let's start with the deals. What do ya got?
>>Right off the bat, yesterday you guys talked about the $80 Blue-Ray player at Wal-Mart actually going to be $70 bucks. But the thing about that player is that it doesn't do any of the BD live features where it doesn't do, it can't connect to the internet and it can't do Netflix streaming. So we actually recommend, we do buying guides on our site and I think we're the only Black Friday site that does that, we recommend the $100 Insignia at Best Buy because we figure if you're gonna make an $80 investment, $20 bucks you get the added connectivity features is a pretty good deal. The guy who was on before, the Michigan guy, [laughter]
>>Molly: From cheapskate, Rick Broida, yeah
>>Yeah I hope he's not a Michigan fan cause gee, it's six years in row, right?
>>Molly: Oh my goodness and you're about to smack down his deal too. You are just
>>Brian: Brim is bringing it today.
>>Molly: You're a troublester, Brim
>>Brian: We need to bring him back more often. That's what I'm sayin. I like him. Molly: New favorite
>>His LG deal is 94 so, the only drawback is a door buster so I mean you're gonna have to fight the Black Friday crowds.
>>Brian: Well that's why you bring your elbow pads.
>>Molly: You get to be there in person
>>Brian: So Michael would you say this is a sweet deal?
>>I would say it's a sweet deal.
>>Molly: No, no, no
>>Brian: No, no, no
>>Molly: It is a remarkable
>>Brian: Sweet deal. I want to hear it crack
>>Sweet deal.
>>Molly: There we go. Thank you, Michael. Alright we want more deals, more deals. Keep them comin. What else do you got?
>>So do you just want me to rattle them off?
>>Molly: Yeah go crazy. Just give us a couple you think are really excellent.
>>Alright probably best television deal out there is $250 you can see a Westinghouse 32 inch television at Target, LCD television
>>Molly: That's pretty good
>>Wal-Mart has $250 Emerson one but I think on the whole Westinghouse is a little bit more respective brand and they've got a little bit better track record. I mean Panasonic, Sony, Samsung but at least they're relatively known. The $200 eMachine at Best Buy is pretty good. It's actually like a decent computer, not terrible. You'd expect a $200 eMachine gotta be pretty, you know, awful but it's pretty decent and then if you've got a little more spending money they have a $400 HPT 4300 processor laptop at Staples. That's probably the best laptop deal in the $300 to $400 range. And then at Wal-Mart they've got the Acer $500 17.3 inch laptop but according to their ad it's only going to be online at Wal-Mart.com
>>Molly: Oh really
>>If you go to Wal-Mart.com and look at the ad right now, you can actually click the item and it will say whether it will be online, in store or both and it says it will be available online and in store so I'm not sure if that's an oversight or if it actually will be available in the store but the verdict on the ad says shop at Wal-Mart.com for these online exclusive deals.
>>Molly: So how do you shop on Black Friday? Do you actually go, cause you mentioned the door buster thing, fighting the crowds and frankly I don't want to go to Wal-Mart cause I don't want to die. Cause I feel like every year that's all I hear about the Wal-Mart Black frenzy, somebody dies.
>>Brian: Somebody will die on Black Friday
>>Molly: So do you [laughter], it's like a teaser for a movie or something so do you shop online or do you ever actually go to the store?
>>Yeah I basically shopped on line for the last three years. Before that I was a young kid, young boy, I actually liked the physical aspect of Black Friday shopping
>>Brian: I know, it is fun.
>>Molly: Throwing elbows
>>It's fun, yeah, I mean I played hockey and soccer growing up so I like the contact.
>>Brian: Why not check a mom who's in line buying CD's? Why not? Just give them a little blow in the face. [laughter]
>>Yeah it's pretty crazy. You know like when you're 15 years old and the guy behind you is ramming you with a shopping cart and he's 30 to 40 years old, that it's game time.
>>Molly: That's what I'm talking about. That's how people die.
>>Brian: I'm feeling that
>>Molly: Right there. And I want to hear the story behind you starting the site. It's pretty interesting too. How did this come about? How long have you been doing this?
>>I've been doing this since 2003, I guess officially but [inaudible] the bargain message or bargain shopping message boards like fat wallet, slick deals, Intech and forms aren't exactly the most efficient and the easiest way to kind of organize information, it's very haphazard. So I kind of consolidated all the deals and you know just sent the link out to a couple friends and it really just kind of blew up from there. So the next year I thought I'm gonna do this like full fledged and at this time I was a senior in high school so it was pretty cool.
>>Molly: I feel like a loser. But that's great for you. Good job. Good initiative, Michael.
>>I know I hit the big leagues cause I was actually filed suit again in 2005 from Office Depot for posting their ads. I guess they didn't like it that much.
>>Molly: That's outstanding. And what I like about the site actually I really do like that you have the buying guides and that you're not just saying to people, this is really cheap. Go buy it. You know cause I think, not that Rick Broida does that, which he does not. I'm not gonna let you, you know, stir things up here. [laughter] But I do like that about your site. And I want to thank you very much for giving us some of your deals today. That's great. Good luck, good luck staying up on Black Friday
>>Brian: We'll talk to you later.
>>Molly: Now the phones are still open at 888-900-CNET. I think we have time for like one quick call.
>>Brian: Well let's take, if it's kind of more like I guess a product call cause some people are asking some help questions. Let's take line 2 with Adam in Chicago. Adam
>>Molly: Hey Adam, are you there?
>>Yep
>>Molly: Hey, how's it going? You have a question for us here at the holiday help desk?
>>Yep
>>Molly: Hit it
>>Brian: Do it
>>Hi I'm wondering if I should get an iPhone or wait for the Pre to come to AT&T for my 14th birthday Hanukah present, which is coming up in December? I'm wondering which one I should get.
>>Brian: This is like the sweetest call we've ever had.
>>Molly: I know
>>Brian: I'm already melting
>>Molly: We kind of love you. Boy, I mean so okay well let's start with
>>Brian: First of all
>>Molly: What kind of, I mean what do you want to do with your phone? I think the major thing that you're gonna get that's different here is the Palm Pre has a keyboard
>>Brian: Yep
>>Mainly I'm gonna be using the internet
>>Molly: Oh well
>>Brian: If you want the best browser, I mean it's so cliche to say but everyone will outright admit that the browser on safari for the iPhone is quite possibly the best mobile browser we've seen at this point in time.
>>Molly: It's really good
>>Brian: Has multi touch, the way it zooms, its responsiveness. It is sexy.
>>Molly: So you get all the games and stuff. I mean they're, you know, the app thing on the Palm -- I'm not gonna you know necessarily say the iPhone is the winner cause they have 100,000 apps cause I'm sure 90,000 of them are crap.
>>Brian: Are fart apps
>>Molly: Which are cool, don't get me wrong but I just feel like the Palm Pre has none of that right now.
>>Brian: Well the Palm Pre store has about 300 apps right now, okay so that alone but Adam's probably gonna like games. I don't think he's gonna like you know
>>He likes texting right?
>>Brian: Adam, texting?
>>Yeah
>>Molly: You down with texting? Okay let me ask you this, do you have good service on AT&T and you know that at your house.
>>Yep
>>Molly: I'm thinking that you should go with iPhone honestly, and I wouldn't necessarily at this point feel that confident about waiting for the palm pre to get to AT&T cause I don't feel that confident about Palm so I would say if it's coming up and it's your Hanukah birthday thing, I would go iPhone cause at least you know you're gonna get that now and they're not gonna go out of business.
>>Brian: Yeah, I'm with you there. [laughter] Okay you know let's take one more call. This one, this is kind of like a help call but I think it will be relevant for people. Andrew, what's goin on?
>>Hey I want to know how easy it would be, if I get a Droid, to hook up to my Mac and sync video and music and stuff like that?
>>Molly: No can do, no I'm kidding. That is a lie. That is an irresponsible lie. I have no idea.
>>Brian: You are irresponsible, Molly Wood. [laughter] Okay so there are a few ways to do it. Now there's a manual way when you connect your Droid to your Mac you physically drag and drop photos and movie files and songs but that's really clunky right? If you want something that's a little more integrated
>>Molly: It's not that clunky
>>Brian: Well dragging? I like it when it's all automatic
>>Molly: Oh I don't like that but okay
>>Brian: Do you use, here's the question, do you use iTunes already or not?
>>Well I use, yeah, I have an iPod touch, the first one and I use it and mainly I mainly drag everything on there so I don't have to resync it all the time. So mainly dragging it is not a problem for me. I just wanted to know if I'm gonna have to jump through a bunch of hoops, you know.
>>Brian: Yeah there's a few options you have so you can do the manual you know drag and drop yourself. There's also a cool little product called salling, it's s-a-l-l-i-n-g. It's a media sync program that's for both Mac and Windows that allows your Droid to copy over your playlist, your music, your podcasts, your photos so that's something that you might want to consider looking at. Also another product called Double Twist
>>Molly: Double Twist, exactly
>>Brian: It's another killer application that works with third party phones to move your content over so this is for all listeners out there. Those are just some solutions that will you know really help you guys out.
>>Now what about contacts? Will that do contacts?
>>Brian: Well the thing is that off the bat because there is no direct apple to Droid contact sync that I know of at the moment.
>>Molly: Right I don't think. Yeah I don't think that there is, as far as I know. Like I think you can do the old export as a CSV and then you know import that onto your phone and that is pretty much the way you're gonna go unless you're using something like exchange or Google. I mean obviously if you have all your contacts in Google, you are set and it might even be easier than exporting to CSV to just
>>Brian: auto sync
>>Molly: Auto sync with Google and then boom, you're pretty much there.
>>Brian: Exactly so
>>Molly: Yeah so hopefully
>>Alright
>>Molly: Hopefully that will help. You should have no problems using the Droid with the MacBook
>>Brian: No you'll be fine either way.
>>Molly: You're good to go, yeah. Alright we, speaking of going, have got to get going but before we do go it's time to announce whose taking home the iPod Nano from the Holiday giveaway that was posted yesterday at crave.cnet.com. And the winner is ilovejiff
>>Brian: You love jiff?
>>Molly: I love Jiff
>>Brian: Oh that's the winner
>>Molly: We've got the chat room name right now. IloveJiff you should be receiving an email from CNET shortly. Maybe you can give the Nano to Jiff and Jiff would really appreciate it. You'll be getting an email from us and congratulations to you.
>>Brian: Alright we're gonna wrap up our second holiday help desk show. I thought it went alright
>>Molly: I thought so
>>Brian: Did we survive?
>>Molly: Plus I mean we have a new thing, right?
>>Brian: What is it?
>>Molly: Ready, one, two, three, sweet deals [laughter]
>>Brian: Oh in harmony too. Alright Tom and Brian Cooley will be hosting it tomorrow. Rick Broida, the cheapest fool I know, the cheapskate will be back and we'll talk to Craig Berma [assumed spelling] from Amazon. He'll talk about some of the hot trends. Amazon has these great Goldbox deals that they're doing everyday so you want to check out that and more coming up for Black Friday and beyond.
>>Molly: Bye bye ^M00:31:26 [ Music ]
