T-Mobile G1 Video
T-Mobile G1 Video Transcript
>> Hi I'm David Carnoy, Executive Editor for cnet.com and we're here at the launch event for the G1 with Google. This is an HTC phone with the Android operating system from Google. It is going to be locked to the T-Mobile network initially. One of the features you'll find on this phone that isn't on the iPhone is an actual keyboard. It's a QWERTY keyboard. It looks a little bit like the Sidekick but it isn't quit like that. The phone comes in three colors, black, white and a bronze color which is sort of a brown color. It comes with a 1 gigabyte micro SD card but you can obviously expand that to 8 gigs or even higher capacity card down the road. The battery is removable. There'll be no extended battery for the phone. The phone also features WiFi, a 3.2 mega pixel camera. That camera only captures still images however. It does not capture video. There is a video application for viewing videos and because this is an open source phone, Google, obviously, hopes that developers will be developing a wide range of multimedia applications for this phone. And a lot of people are wondering whether this would be a 3G phone, it's indeed a 3G phone. T-Mobile will be rolling out. It is in the process of rolling out its 3G network right now and it claims it will have 27 cities on board with 3G when this phone launches in November. There is no headphone jack built into the phone. There is an adapter that you have to plug in to the USB connector on the bottom to listen to the music. In terms of the interface, like the iPhone, there's a lot of sliding and dragging and Google appears to have done a pretty good job on making this a user-friendly phone. You can drag-and-drop applications on home screen. There also is a little ball that you can use to maneuver around the menus. Google is really touting that tight integration with these applications 'cause I have seen a lot of G-mail support. There is no Microsoft exchange support however so this is not gonna be the most corporate-friendly phone at first, the iPhone had that problem. The other key thing is this is Google's effort to make a mobile internet phone. It's really designed to obviously leverage Google's presence on the internet to Google, maps, all the Google Applications. We made a few calls with the phone, sounds pretty good. There is very good T-Mobile coverage at the event as you might expect at a T-mobile event. I'm David Cornoy and that's the T-Mobile G1 with Google.

Google Android and T-Mobile G1
The good: The T-Mobile G1 features a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G support, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The Google Android operating system offers good integration with Google applications as well as access to the Amazon MP3 Store and YouTube. As more applications become available, the G1 will also become a more powerful smartphone for all types of users.
The bad: The G1 doesn't include a standard heaphone jack and lacks Microsoft Exchange support. There are some annoying design quirks that make the smartphone uncomfortable to hold and difficult to use. You can't save downloaded applications to a memory card. Speakerphone quality wasn't the greatest.
The bottom line: While we're not in love with the design and would have liked some additional features, the real beauty of the T-Mobile G1 is the Google Android platform, as it has the potential to make smartphones more personal and powerful. That said, it's not quite there yet, so for now, the G1 is best suited for early adopters and gadget hounds, rather than consumers and business users.
