>> Let's face it: everyone loves the classic Mercedes 300SL gullwing, even Mercedes. So they've gone back to do it again. It's the SLS AMG. It's an all new model not based on anything else, and replaces the outgoing McLaren SLR. You'll see all kinds of throwbacks to the legendary 300SL, from the mouth to the gullwing doors to the long hood, short-butt layout. That thing down around your ankles there, that's the door handle. Yeah, I don't get it either. 571 horsepower coming out of a 6.3 liter AMG-assembled V8. That, and around 500 foot pounds of torque get us up to 60 in well under four seconds. The power gets out to the wheels via an AMG dual clutch, seven speed gearbox, and like any proper, retro super GT, when you lean on it, the tires that do the smoking are the ones in the rear. Period. Fitting this car's jet age roots, the gear selector resembles the thrust levers on a jet plane. Sort of. The SLS AMG hits the market in spring 2010 for about a quarter million dollars. ^M00:01:15 [ MUSIC ]
