>> Hey I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital Audio and MP3 and today we're taking a First Look at the Memorex MMP-8640. The 8640 is a flash-based 4 gigabyte MP3 player that does MP3 playback along with wma, protected wma, wave files; it also has a radio, a voice recorder, FM recorder, photo viewer and actually does video playback as well. It's around 120 dollars which is pretty expensive for a 4 gigabyte MP3 player. There's a lot of competitors out there especially in like the flash MP3 player category around the same price range that just do a much better job, so we're having a lot of time recommending this player but it is out there and there is some cool things about it. One of the more novel features of the 8640 is that it has built-in LD lights inside the navigation pad that you can change from different color schemes; the screen color is gonna along with that. Another interesting feature on the Memorex player is a My DJ button on the top of the player that will automatically generate play lists. It's great if you're kind of bored with the shuffle feature on most players and want a shuffle that is a little more intelligent and will create play lists for you based on similar genre, similar artists, and so that was a really cool feature we liked about this. We just kind of wish it wasn't in this exact player. One of the things we didn't really like about the Memorex player is the fact that the design is a little bit clumsy as well. The volume buttons on the side are a little bit easy to press and when you press them, when you squeezing the player to put volume up and down, there's other buttons on the other side exactly opposite the volume buttons that control recording, and will also control powering the device off. We hit the record button accidentally more times than we can count and we've got all kinds of voice recordings we didn't intend to make. One of the better features of this Memorex player is video playback. It has a 1.8 inch screen, decent resolution, unfortunately it's still in this price range; there's better players for video. Well I'm Donald Bell and that was a First Look at the Memorex MMP-8640. ^M00:02:04 [ Music ] ^M00:02:07

Memorex MMP8640 Review

The good: The Memorex MMP8640 is an MP3 player that provides a healthy range of features at an affordable price.

The bad: The buttons lining the sides of the Memorex MMP8640 are too easy to press accidentally; audio quality is only average; and the overall design feels cheap.

The bottom line: Vastly superior MP3 players available in the same price range. You deserve better.
