>> I'm John Falcone, senior editor from CNET.com and this is the Logitech Squeezebox Boom. As you can guess from the name, this is the Boombox version of Logitech's Squeezebox line of digital audio receivers. That means it can tap into your wired or wireless home network and access a wide variety of internet audio services as well as streaming music straight off your PC. But what's really good about this product is that it can access live music straight off the web, all sorts of internet radio stations, free music services such as Last.fm and Pandora, and paid music services such as Rhapsody and SIRIUS Internet Radio. Now with all those options, things could get complicated to control but the Squeezebox Boom makes it pretty simple. You can either use the nice front panel controls centered on this giant knob or you can use the remote which magnetizes right to the top for easy access. The front panel display is very bright and easy to read even from pretty far across the room or you can even access this unit from your PC's browser and set all sorts of complicated functions such as the alarm, the brightness of the display, the sleep time, and everything else. While the overall design is pretty good, we didn't like that the high gloss finish was a real fingerprint magnet. Also, this is AC only and it would have been nice if there had been some sort of rechargeable battery options so you could just bring it around the house from room to room. The other issue is this is limited to pretty much non-DRM audio sources. So, it won't play the full panaplee of stuff from iTunes for instance. The good: Wi-Fi radio with built-in speakers; compact form factor and bright, easy-to-read screen; supports Wi-Fi and Ethernet home networks; compatible with virtually all non-DRM audio file formats; provides access to PC-based music files (on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines) as well as PC-free Internet radio and podcasts; able to access multiple free (Last.fm, Pandora, Slacker) and premium (Rhapsody, Sirius) online music services; excellent online account integration.
The bad: Rubberized controls and reflective plastic finish show smudges and fingerprints; click knob and control layout takes a bit of getting used to; no compatibility with DRM music files, such as those purchased from iTunes or Zune online stores; AC-only operation.
The bottom line: The Logitech Squeezebox Boom is the best all-in-one tabletop Wi-Fi radio we've seen to date.
