>> Rich Brown: Hi. I'm Rich Brown, Senior Editor for CNET.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the Editor's Choice-winning Logitech Performance Mouse MX. So this is a high-end mouse. It cost about a hundred bucks, and it's designed for people who take their desktop mouse experience very seriously. Now, we find this mouse super comfortable. It has all kinds of cool features, but probably the most interesting part of it is it's new sensor technology. Now, there's kind of been an arms race going on in mice for the past year or so. Before the highest-end option was a laser sensor, which is a step up from the old optical and even the ball mice before that. Last year, though, Microsoft introduced what's called this blue-track sensor, which let you mouse all of a sudden on things like glossy surfaces, cloths. You can, you can mouse on like pants or a carpet. So Logitech has answered blue-track this year with its own dark-field sensor. Now, dark-field lets you do everything that blue-track can, but it also goes a step further and lets you mouse on transparent glass. So we have a basic laptop, and we have both mice connected to it wirelessly. So, first, we have this surface that Microsoft actually sent us to test with this blue-track mouse. So this is two pieces of high-gloss stone here. The piece of marble and what may be granite. So first, we'll show the Microsoft mouse. This is an Explorer mouse that uses the blue-track sensor. So you can see, we have the mouse going on the high-polished granite and the marble, and it works no problem. Tried the Logitech mouse. Does the same thing. So we have a pillow here, and you can see the Microsoft mouse works no trouble. And same with the Logitech mouse. Problem comes in for Microsoft when we hit the glass surface. So we have a transparent glass table here. First, we'll show up the Logitech mouse this time. Now, you can see it's just as smooth as it was on the marble and the pillow. However, the Microsoft mouse, no such luck. So, it's pretty clear that dark-field is the better technology, and this is also a more expensive mouse than Microsoft's blue-track products. But that said, there's a whole lot more going on with this mouse than with the Microsoft product. You have Logitech's fast scroll wheel that lets you toggle between sort of a notched scrolling, and free-spinning scrolling that's really fast for going to long documents. You also have all kinds of buttons on the side here including front, back. You can zoom, and then use the scroll button to zoom in and out of documents. There's also a hidden button down here that lets you toggle through different applications. Now, you've notice that so far both of these mice are wireless. Logitech actually has a pretty cool feature with that tool, though. So here's the Logitech's USB receiver. Now it's just a tiny little USB plug, and it's so small, you don't have to take it out of your laptop when you want to travel. Logitech has also added its unifying capability to this receiver, which means that you can use this mouse and any other product in Logitech's unifying family, and you won't need to plug in another receiver. You can just use this one. Now, this mouse is also rechargeable. There's a mini-USB plug here. It comes with a cable. You just plug it in, and the charge will let you work. Now, we don't want to say that the Microsoft mouse is a bad product because it certainly isn't. Blue-track lets you mouse on all kinds of surfaces that you weren't able to previously, but as long as you're willing to pay for it, this Logitech mouse gives you the best design in the industry, all kinds of features as well as the most advanced sensor around. So I'm Rich Brown, and this is the Logitech Performance Mouse MX. [ Music ]

Logitech Performance Mouse MX Review

The good: New Darkfield sensor lets you mouse almost anywhere, including glass; wireless and rechargeable, with no downtime while recharging; tiny USB microreceiver works with other products in Logitech's Unifying devices family; variety of useful, customizable buttons.

The bad: Expensive (but worth it); Unifying feature only a benefit if you upgrade to other Unifying products.

The bottom line: Logitech has met and surpassed Microsoft's recent mouse technology innovations by introducing the most versatile mouse sensor on the market in its new Performance Mouse MX. But even if you don't have a glass table crying out to become a workspace, this high-end input device has enough features and cushy design to make it a justifiable indulgence for anyone who takes their cursor control seriously.
