>> Hi, I'm Molly Wood from CNET.com here at CES 2009, taking a first look at the Logitech Harmony 1100 remote control. Now I know this looks a little more like a personal navigation device or an MP3 player but in fact, it is a top of the line remote control. You can see its touchscreen here and it makes it very simple, this remote, to personalize this touchscreen so that you can make it fit to specific devices that you have. So for example, Xbox or watch my television. That's a hallmark of these Harmony remotes. They're easy to use and easy to personalize. Now, the bad news about this remote is that it does cost 500 dollars. It has some advance features like I said the personalizable screen, it also has RF so if you have RF devices, these remote can control them. If you want the RF transmitter though, that's gonna be another 99 dollars, so this one adds up pretty quickly and these days, there are more and more remotes coming out that are starting to challenge the Logitech Harmony dominance so they might wanna reconsider the price on that one. Overall though this is a high-end device, it looks very easy to use and frankly a lot of fun with that nice big screen. For CES 2009, I'm Molly Wood for CNET.com ^M00:01:12 [ Music ]

Logitech Harmony 1100 Review

The good: Tablet-style, touch-screen, universal remote that controls 15 devices; controls components via infrared or RF (for an extra charge); includes rechargeable battery and docking station; Web-programmable and compatible with Windows and Macintosh PCs via simple, straightforward software wizard; less expensive than competing tablet models; faster response time and improved operation versus Harmony 1000.

The bad: Pricey, especially considering that the RF module costs extra; screen drains battery quickly when it's not left in the charging stand; no easy way to use in more than one room; lacks the design and programming flexibility (you can't design your own buttons, custom screen layouts, or program multi-device macros) that many high-end remotes offer; setting up systems with more than five or six components can get pretty tricky.

The bottom line: The Logitech Harmony 1100 is an excellent touch-screen universal remote that corrects most of the shortcomings and frustrations of its predecessor, but its high price will relegate it to high-end home theaters only.
