>> The new iPhone software gets poned [assumed spelling], Windows is a big disappointment on the OLPC, and Panasonic wants to give your family an HDTV for posterity. It's Thursday, August seventh, I'm Natalie Del Conte, and it's time to get Loaded. The iPhone is about to get poned again. Pone Age, the software that hacks the iPhone's OS is about to release its second version that will hack the iPhone 2.0.1 firmware upgrade. The development team says this will be ready some time today, only three days after the firmware upgrade, this must be some kind of record. Speaking of iPhone, a second mobile phone provider is getting the rights to sell the iPhone in South America. America Mobile, the Mexican based carrier, is bringing the iPhone to at least ten South American countries towards the end of this month. Meanwhile, Telefonica is also preparing the sell the iPhone there. That's not fair. They get two carriers and we only get the one? Sprint has put a cap on its EBDO users. The company has been saying that they would do this for some time, but customers have just started to notice it this week. This is Sprint's wireless broadband service. They're now allowing users five gigabytes per month, or three hundred megabytes per month while roaming off the network. The nice thing about this is that they'll help you stay within your allotment by providing you with a usage meter. The consequences of going over your limit seem extreme though. The statement customers received said that the company may quote, deny, terminate, modify, or suspend service, end quote, if you go over. But this wouldn't be the first time Sprint broke up with its customers. Remember all the users they dumped last winter for calling customer service too much? MySpace is bringing free broadband to users in the UK who want to browse pages that the company owns. If you want to search anything non-MySpace related, you're out of luck. MySpace partnered with The Cloud, a European wireless company, to bring Newscorp owned sites to all Cloud hotspots for free. There are about seven thousand of them in the UK. This is nice, but does anyone in the UK still use MySpace? I thought everyone over there liked Bibo [assumed spelling]. UK Loaded viewers, [inaudible] or I'll ask Rory Reed. The new OLPCXO was recently tested, running Windows XP. The results, not so good. According to In Gadget, the booting time for XP off its four gig SD card clocks in at one minute and twenty four seconds, while Internet Explorer six took around five seconds, and Microsoft Word 2003 around forty two seconds. The system is also limited to running just one app at a time due to lag. Of course it's not surprising that Windows would slow down a machine with these specs, so my advice to OLPC users, stick with Linux, it's a perfectly capable operating system. Blockbuster is going forward with their kiosk plan, even though we all agreed it was a pretty lame idea. The latest installment is a bit better idea, only ten years too late. They're now rolling out kiosks outside of their stores that will let customers rent and download movies. The company is set to install fifty kiosks around the country by the end of the year, and ten thousand more in the next eighteen months. Maybe they're wanting to shut down their brick and mortar stores all together? This makes a bit more sense than the digital download kiosks in their store that they announced a few months ago, but they really need to get their streaming and digital rental service up and running, and just stop monkeying around with physical DVDs already. If you're tired of taking out your laptop when going through airport security, the transportation security administration is trying to work with you. Manufacturers like Mobile Edge, Scube Design, and Targus have been in the works to design checkpoint friendly bags that provide a clear image of the laptop for x-ray scanners. This should make traveling a little easier, since having most of your valuables out in the open can sometimes prove to be disastrous. A friend of mine actually had their laptop stolen when going through airport security. The bags will be available for purchase this month. Nissan showed off some new car technology this week that could help you avoid accidents. The company unveiled a car with a brake resistance device that scans for dangers on the road, such as speeding cars. If it detects a danger, it will try to deter the driver from changing lanes. You can override the system of course. This is part of Nissan's initiative to cut fatalities in their cars in half by 2015. The auto pilot feature freaks me out a little though. I'd have to see it in action to be a believer. Hopefully Brian Cooley can give us a demo in Car Tech some time soon. T-Mobile is expanding its 3G network into Sin City. The company's second city to get 3G is Las Vegas, which is great for all the convention goers there. New York City was the first metropolis that T-Mobile laid out its 3G service just a few months ago on the UMTS network. The company plans to expand its 3G network to at least twenty additional markets by the end of 2008, so sit tight if you don't live in either of those big cities. Do you want a new HDTV, surround system, and computer setup? Consider participating in Panasonic's Living in HD research project. Panasonic is looking for sixty families to observe as part of their attempt to study functionality, design concepts, and how families use technology. They'll give you a fifty inch Viera plasma internet enabled HDTV, an HD camcorder, a Lumix digital camera, a network camera, a blueray player, a Toughbook laptop, a photo printer, a home theater system, and a Nintendo Wii. Go to the URL on the screen if you want to sign up, I definitely would if I had a family. Those are our headlines for today, and that wraps up your week of getting Loaded. But if you've missed any episodes, please do catch up by visiting loaded.cnettv.com. Thank you for watching, I'll see you on Monday. I'm Natalie Del Conte with CNET TV, and you've just been Loaded. ^M00:05:12 [ music ]
