>> You can now use the Microsoft Surface to pick up chicks. The Samsung Instinct is priced to compete with the iPhone. And we have a backstage pass to the new M. Night Shyamalan film. It's Thursday, June 12. I'm Natali Del Conte, and it's time to get Loaded. ^M00:00:14 [ Music ] The Microsoft Surface has surfaced in a second location. The tabletop computer is now at the iBar Lounge at the Rio in Las Vegas. Some of the things that bar goers can do is flirt. That's Microsoft's term for it, not mine. You can talk from one table to another, so making an introduction to the girls at the next table will be a bit easier. You can also order up standard or custom-made drinks from the bar, either to your own table or another table as romantic gesture. This is high-tech hookin' up. ^M00:00:44 [ Sound effect ] T-Mobile has agreed to settle out of court in their case Starbucks and AT&T. T-Mobile had been suing the happy new couple over Starbucks use of AT&T free Wi-Fi in all of its stores. Details of this deal were not disclosed, but at least we won't have to hear about it anymore, and we all get free Wi-Fi while getting hyped up on caffeine. ^M00:01:00 [ Sound effect ] M. Night Shyamalan's new film, "The Happening," focuses on a pandemic threat here in New York City. Our producer, Mark Lucey, sat down with the director and the cast to talk about the role that the environment plays in the film. Take a look. ^M00:01:14 [ Sound effect ]

>> Do you feel that there's this need for a drastic change in the way that humans are interacting with the environment. And were there any underlying messages that you hoped to instill in the viewers that watch the film?

>> You know, we're getting our report card right now. For the last - whatever it is - since industrialization has began. And half the people are deciding whether they believe it or not. And half the people are going oh my God. ^M00:01:35 [ Sirens and explosions ] This is our generation's chance to crack the trajectory of where we're going. You know, we can't just keep taking, taking, taking without any repercussions. So it's something that was on my mind, and on the minds of everybody in my generation.

>> Considering the gigantic role that the environment plays in this film, were there any decisions or steps that you've taken and encouraged other people to take, prior to shooting the film, to be more green friendly? Or...

>> How can you not, and I'm not going crazy. You know, 'cause, you know, I still drive a big car. You know, I got things that I gotta work on. But certainly doing my own part at home. Turning the lights off when I walk out the door, and certainly instilling that in my children. The only thing I hope - 'cause I'm an avid golfer, and I was hitting bad shots and taking big chunks of divots - and I hope that - I hope Mother Nature's okay with gold 'cause I do have a huge appreciation for nature when I'm out there.

>> We did do the little things, you know? Almost all the cars on the movie that we used were hybrids. And we did, like, you know, smaller, you know, like the crew gift was a recyclable plastic water container that everybody had on their hips while they were making the movie. Instead of having 75 bottles of Evian water, and keep on throwing the plastic bottles, you know, we refreshed it from a tank.

>> It's interesting, the small things that you can do. It's not as if you need to, like, take giant leaps and bounds to make a huge difference. If everyone just did little things -

>> Right, right. You just gotta watch carbon footprint.

>> It's just like - yeah.

>> Just make it as small as possible.

>> Yeah.

>> Instead of, like, tossing everything in the garbage all the time, make everything reusable. That's - I do my acting. I recycle my acting. ^M00:03:09 [ Sound effect ]

>> The film opens in theaters on Friday. ^M00:03:13 [ Sound effect ] The iPhone will spread to 13 new countries in Latin America and the Czech Republic courtesy of Telefonica. We recently learned that Telefonica would be bringing the iPhone to Spain, but now the company says that they are going to tackle new countries, which brings a potential 500 million new users. The company already sells the iPhone in the UK and Ireland. The iPhone will also be going down under on July 11, as it hits Australia for the first time, courtesy of Vodafone. ^M00:03:37 [ Sound effect ] And Gadget is reporting rumors that the Samsung instinct is gonna cost $199.00 on Sprint. This information comes form internal Sprint memos, but it wouldn't be surprise. This all touch screen phone can't be an iPhone killer, after all, if it costs more than the iPhone. ^M00:03:52 [ Sound effect ] Next Tuesday is download day. Mozilla wants to set a world record for most copies of its browser downloaded in a single day with the release of Firefox 3. So mark your calendars to do the download, or else I'll remind you next week on Loaded. There's also word of Mozilla working on a mobile version of Firefox. They are not many concrete details about this just yet, but I'd certainly be interested in trying it out. ^M00:04:13 [ Sound effect ] Metallica is not really working to gain popularity points these days. The band, which has a reputation for being Internet haters because of their opposition to Napster, is now bullying bloggers into taking down reviews of their upcoming album. The thing is, the band invited a select few music bloggers to listen to the new music. They didn't make them sign nondisclosure agreements, nor did they even ask them not to write about what they heard, so what did they expect? The band's management had no legal authority to ask the bloggers to take down their reviews, but most of them did anyway, just to be good sports. ^M00:04:44 [ Sound effect ] Meanwhile, Pearl Jam is embracing technology. The band is gonna sell songs from it's summer concerts on Verizon wireless. Three songs from each performance will be available on Verizon. One of them will be free, and the other two will be available for purchase for $1.99 from your phone. ^M00:05:00 [Sound effect ] PBS is bringing shows to Wholou, which is significant because the station has typically been opposed to programming with commercials. The publicly supported network announced that it will bring several programs to Wholou, including NOVA, Wired Science, and Scientific American Frontiers. Wholou will place 30-second ads before each program and share revenue with PBS. ^M00:05:18 [ Sound effect ] Before we get through today, I want to quickly thank you for all the responses I received about using Wikipedia in educational bibliographies. Most of you said that teachers and academics do not accept Wikipedia as a valid source, but several students use it as jumping off point in their research. I got some really interesting emails, and I'm gonna read them on the show next week because we're out of time for today. But if you haven't rung in yet, please feel free to write me at loaded@cnet.com. ^M00:05:41 [ Sound effect ] Those are all your headlines for today, and that wraps up your week of getting Loaded. Next wee Loaded will come to you on a slightly different schedule because I'll be filming from my home city of San Francisco. The show should be ready, actually, a bit earlier than usual because we're filming late at night, rather than early in the morning. So I will see you on Monday from the City by the Bay. But in the meantime, if you've missed any episodes of Loaded this week, be sure to tune in, loaded@cnettv.com. Have a great weekend, everybody. I'm Natali Del Conte with CNET TV, and you've just been Loaded. ^M00:06:09 [ Music ]
