Hi everyone, this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and today we'll check out the latest router from Linksys, the Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router WRT610N. First off, yes that name is a mouthful and I don't like it at all! I do like, however, the fact that this is a true dual-band wireless router. It's actually one of very few on the current market that offers this feature. The WRT610N has two separate Wireless-N access points, one uses the 2.4Ghz frequency while the other uses the 5Ghz frequency, and both can be set to operate at the same time. This is significant because the 5ghz spectrum is sort of untapped and therefore is better for signal strength, stability and range. However, as most existing wireless clients are 2.4ghz-based and will not work with a 5ghz-only router, the WRT610N will help you take advantage of the new spectrum without shutting out the 2.4Ghz clients and without compromising the speed for either frequency. Bearing the new sleek design with internal antenna and the disk shape casing, the WRT610N has a slightly larger footprint than previous models, though overall it's still very compact. This small increment in size allows for better ventilation and the addition of an USB port. This port when hosting an external hard drive turns the WRT610N into a full feature network attached storage device that supports FTP server and Universal PnP Media Server. The router also supports high-speed wired connection with all of its ports, on the back being gigabit-capable. There are 4 LAN ports and one WAN port . The WRT610N is the also the first router from Linksys that ships with Linksys EasyLink adviser software for both PC and Mac. The Mac version has just been announced by Linksys recently. The software actually makes the setup process much easier for novice users than the traditional web-interface. The router supports WiFi Protected Setup for quickly adding wireless clients to the network. You can access that feature here via the button right in the middle of the blue LED status lights on the front of the router. The WRT610N is also Linksys's first attempts into "green" tech. The device is mostly made of recycled materials. For this reason, the router has the Energy Star certification and costs only $149, which is a great deal for such high-end router.
