>> Hi, I'm Mathew Moskovciak assistant editor from CNET and this is the LGRC 797T. This is a DVD recorder slash VCR combo unit. And like all these units, it has a pretty boxy look. It definitely won't be the most stylish component you have in your home theatre. Like many DVD recorders coming out now, it has a built in digital tuner so if you connect an antenna you'll be able to pull in over the air ATSC signals. Now one thing you should note is that unlike a set top ATSC tuner this will not be able to tune into high def broadcasts. What happens is everything that isn't high def will be down scaled to a standard def signal, but it still will have the wide screen aspect ratio. Looking around back, you'll see that there is an HGMI output and it does do DVD up scaling. In terms of performance, this is only an average DVD recorder. It can't compare to Panasonic's units because it doesn't have as good of an LP recording speed. And also, the fact that it lacks S video input really hurts it because you are forced to use composite, which is a lower quality signal. On the other hand, if you're not concerned about video quality that probably won't matter to you or if you're only planning to use the VCR or record off the tuner then you won't be hurt by the lack of S video inputs. Overall it's hard to recommend it compared to Panasonic's which isn't that much more expensive and has better features and better performance, but, if you need and IR blaster, this is really one of your only solutions. I'm Mathew Moskovciak from CNET and this is the LGRC 797T. ^M00:01:39 [ Music ]

LG RC797T Review
The good: Records video to DVD or VHS; HDMI output up to 1080i; digital and analog tuner for over-the-air TV reception; IR blaster for cable/satellite box control; FireWire input for camcorder dubbing; USB port for digital media playback.
The bad: No S-Video input; ATSC tuner cannot deliver full HDTV resolution; lack of EPG makes timer recordings a hassle; LP mode doesn't compare to Panasonic's; no flexible custom recording speed.
The bottom line: The LG RC797T is a competent DVD/VHS recorder with some attractive extra features, but it doesn't quite stack up to the competition.
