>> Hey everyone, I'm Jeff Bakalar, assistant editor here at CNET.com and I'm here today with the LG LFD790. The LFD790 is a 2.1 home theater in a box; it includes a DVD player that can upscale to 720P or 1080I. You can also hook up a USB thumb drive and it will be able to play MP3s, WMAs, Divix[SP?] movie files as well as JPEG picture files. The 790 has a touch wheel interface, kind of how an iPods interface works, unfortunately though for the LG it's not really laid out that well and it doesn't really work all the time. The interface for the LG is pretty much primarily on screen, so it's tough to really make out what you're doing. The sound on the 790 is above average, we are pretty impressed with it, it's better for a smaller room though, the sound doesn't really fill a big room like some other larger home theater in a box's tend to do, so if you are going to be purchasing this model we recommend you using it for a smaller room. The 790 has a feature called the virtual surround, however when it was on we couldn't notice a difference whatsoever. In terms of video quality 790 performed about average, it had a couple problems with some smoothing tests that we ran on it. Over all the LG is good for smaller sized room, if you are putting it in a bigger room you might want to opt for a 5.1 home theater in a box. The good: 2.1-channel home theater in a box; upscales DVD via HDMI output; pristine black-gloss finish AV receiver/DVD player, stereo speakers, and powered subwoofer; XM satellite radio ready; easy-to-use onscreen interface for media files.
The bad: An unusually awkward user interface makes playing and switching audio sources entirely too much work; most AV jacks are inconveniently located on the subwoofer; virtual surround mode isn't effective.
The bottom line: The LG LFD790 wins points for its cool looks, low price, and decent feature set, but a variety of design and interface miscues make it tough to recommend.
