LG Hom-Bot Square Video Transcript
Hi, Ryan Crist from CNET here, and today, we've got the LG Hom-Bot Square. The Hom-Bot stands out for its functional feature-rich design and it's got a lot of good things going for it. If you look at the remote sitting here in the charging base which is a nice convenient place for it by the way, you've got this mode button here and this will let you change the way it vacuums your floors. If I hit it right now, it will take it off the default "Zigzag" mode and take me into the "Cell by Cell" mode-- -Cell by cell mode. -and even tell me that it's doing it in the process. It's also got a "My Space" mode that we like a lot. My Space mode lets you take the robot around the space. You kind of steer it like a remote control car and you tell it where you want it to vacuum and then it will vacuum in that area only. It's really cool how it works. We liked it a lot. The design of the Hom-Bot is pretty attractive. It's one of the better-looking robot vacuums in my opinion. The Hom-Bot is a really smart vacuum. It's got this camera on the top that is taking dozens and dozens of photographs of your ceiling every second and this helps it navigate and tell where it is, where it's been, and where it's gonna go. It also has a camera on the bottom and this camera on the bottom helps it tell where the dirt is. So, it's pretty good at finding stuff. It will, however, tend to get stuck in a lot of carpet situations and needs you to help free it. So, it's a little bit high maintenance. Using the Hom-Bot is pretty easy. It's a very simple robot vacuum. It's got the start/stop button. If you press the start/stop button once, it will wake it up. If you press it again, it will start going. That's pretty common on robot vacuums these days. The bin itself opens just by popping open the lid like that which is a nice feature and then you just pull the bin out. It even says "handle" on the handle. It's really, really easy to use. If you take a look at the underside of the Hom-Bot, you'll see that it's got two sets of rotating brushes and these are really helpful for getting into corners, sweeping little bits of gunk and dust out of the carpet. It does a good job cleaning. Another great feature of the Hom-Bot is "Turbo" mode and this is where the machine will work a little faster, spin the brushes harder, and really work to get ground in gunk out of your floors. If you're on a carpet, it will automatically detect that and put that on by default. We like that a lot. In our performance testing, the Hom-Bot stood up to the competition and did a pretty good job. In fact, in the living room test where we filled this living room with rice and set the robot vacuums out and see how much they could get. The Hom-Bot did quite well. The Hom-Bot is also super quiet compared to other robot vacuums, which is nice if you're trying to watch TV while it's running. With its solid performance, ease of use, and feature-rich functionality, the Hom-Bot is a great robot vacuum, no question. It is, however, $799 which is way above anything else that we tested and we tested some other pretty good vacuums. The Roomba 790 performed quite well and the Neato Signature Pro XV did a great job too, and both of those cost significantly less. So, if you're thinking about a robot vacuum for your home, take a look at those, but if you love what you see here and it's a good robot vacuum, feel confident getting it. I'm Ryan Crist for CNET. Thanks for watching.
LG Electronics showed off its Smart Hom-Bot at CES 2011. The robot can link to any Internet-enabled device and act as a remote-controlled security camera, as well as a vacuum cleaner.

LG Hom-Bot Square Review
The good: With its multiple cleaning modes, the LG Hom-Bot Square gives the user a terrific amount of control over how it operates. Its remote is convenient, easy to use, and well-designed.
The bad: The Hom-Bot didn’t clean quite as well as some of the other vacuums we tested -- a major disappointment given its steep $799.99 price tag.
The bottom line: The Hom-Bot boasts some interesting bells and whistles, but after comparing its price and performance with the competition, it’s a tough purchase to justify.
