This LG's great design masks problematic picture quality Video Transcript

Hi. I'm Ty Pendlebury from cnet.com. And this is a review of the LG LM9600. Four years ago, LG made a really big deal about its new series called Scarlet. Well, many people assumed it was a TV show, it turned out to be simply a TV with a great big hole in it. Well, LG quickly abandoned the campaign and the hall, it was from this early experiment and design that we now have what I think is the best looking TV on the market. It's a pity it's not as good at anything else. The LG features a stunningly thin 5 millimeter bezel which in imperial is approximately .000003 miles and it's got this smart black bottom as well. The TV may not be hooked up as on as many features as the competitive Samsung ES8000 TV but it still features a much better controller. The new Magic Motion remote which works so much better than waving frantically about. Other features include Smart TV, Passive 3D and a new Jewel Play feature which lets 2 people play games on 1 TV without cheating. This LCD TV features LED local dimming which means it's capable of better blacks than most LCDs but compared to another TV that's a $1000 cheaper, the Sony-HX850, the TV isn't able to deliver a picture that's anywhere near as natural. Black levels are nowhere near where we expect them to be for flagship television and shadow detail is very muddy. And if you're about to turn it on and to get it back type person, you'll find that the TV's natural tone make everyone look like they got sunburn. The problem is while this TV looks good, it simply too expensive and I simply can't recommend it. If it was half the price even of $3,500, it would still be up against the Panasonic ST-50 which I recommend you just go out and but it today. I'm Ty Pendlebury and this has been the LG LM9600.

We have only minor complaints about the Envision EN9600's image quality, but other 19-inch LCDs offer more features, better stability, and comparable image quality for the same price.

The Pentax K10D's great feature set for the price, pro-level customization, and excellent photo quality make it a bargain amateur dSLR.

LG PZ950 series

Although blessed with solid features, design and performance, the LG PZ950 series can't match the excellent picture quality of other plasmas in its price range.

Samsung LN-46A950

Samsung's LED-backlit LN46A950 represents the peak of flat-panel LCD performance and picture quality, with a price to match.

The Epson Stylus Photo R380 offers a wealth of fun features and great print quality, making it a smart choice for amateur photo hobbyists.

Making bad pictures great

With a few clicks of the mouse, bad photos can become great ones, according to Microsoft researchers. At Techfest 2008 in Redmond, Wash., CNET News.com's Kara Tsuboi demoed two new photo programs that can turn any amateur picture-taker into a professional photographer.

Canon HV20

Canon's HV20 camcorder is a great choice for HD-happy amateurs, but its low-light performance could have been better.

Pantech Link (AT&T)

The Pantech Link is an absolute steal with an excellent array of midrange features, a great slim design, and a wallet-friendly price. We wish only that it had better call quality.

Zoom H2

The Zoom H2 is one of the most affordable handheld audio recorders on the market, and it's packed to the hilt with cool features and handy accessories. Unfortunately, the Zoom H2's cheap construction quality, underwhelming recording performance, and a slow start-up time hold it back from greatness.

Zoom Q3

The Zoom Q3 is a pocket camcorder that doesn't skimp on audio quality. Unfortunately, mediocre video performance makes it a limited recommendation.

LG 55LM9600 Review

The good: The LG LM9600 series TV is an incredibly striking piece of furniture with one of the slimmest bezels we've ever seen. Color reproduction is excellent, after a bit of tweaking. The Magic Motion controller has its quirks but is the best Smart TV navigator out there. The feature set is excellent, and passive 3D is virtually crosstalk-free.

The bad: The LM9600 doesn't perform up to its flagship TV pricing or the expectations created by its full-array local-dimming backlight. Its black levels are significantly worse than those of last year's LG flagship, it suffers from blotchy uniformity, and in shadow detail it lags behind other high-end sets.

The bottom line: While it's got supermodel looks and pricing to match, the LG LM9600 is unfortunately only an amateur performer.
