>> I'm Justin Yu and this is the Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive. Now this 320-gig drive is a cut above other external hard drives because of this numerical keypad on the front here. Now the idea is that you can program up to 10 different user generated passwords to unlock the drive and access the data inside. Now in the chance that the drive is disconnected while in use, the ThinkPad will go into lock down mode so that your would-be thief can't peep your private files. Now conveniently enough, the drive also features an integrated USB cord that tucks neatly into the side here and the whole chassis is wrapped in the same velvety black material that's also found in most of their laptops. Lenovo also includes an extra USB extension cord if you need more slack. The drive is entirely powered by a USB 2.0 bus, but there's a small chance that your computer can't generate enough power, Lenovo also includes a supplemental port and specific plug for the drive. And now unfortunately we have to give the Lenovo ThinkPad Hard Drive a demerit for omitting a FireWire port as always. Now the ThinkPad Hard Drive performed very well in our data transfer speed test. It tore through the test and came out on top of six other drives we compared it to reading an impressive 26-megabytes per second and writing 23. Now unfortunately that little speed boost comes at a cost. While it's one of the fastest drives we've ever tested, it's also one of the most expensive. At the time of this review the retail price is 219 bucks or 69 cents per gigabyte. So this drive is gonna appeal to shoppers that needs a super fast and super secure external hard drive, but the average consumer that wants the best deal for their money will wanna look into a drive like the Seagate FreeAgent Go or one of the Iomega eGos that will give you more gigs for less money and in a hotter package to boot. So I'm Justine Yu, and this is the Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive. ^M00:01:49 [ Music ]

Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive (320GB) Review
The good: Easy-to-use security keypad; integrated USB cord; includes extra power plug; quick transfer speeds.
The bad: Boring design; no FireWire support; expensive cost per gigabyte.
The bottom line: We're impressed by the Lenovo ThinkPad USB Secure Hard Drive's burly security features and rigorous performance results, but the bloated price tag prevents us from recommending it to anyone other than business consumers. If you're shopping for an external hard drive, competing drives give you a cheaper cost per gigabyte in a fancier package.
