>> Hi, I'm Dan Ackerman, Senior Editor at CNET.com and we are here with the Lenovo [assumed spelling] Think Pad R61. Now if this looks familiar, that's because it looks like pretty much every other Think Pad ever. This is one of the very first laptops we've seen with Intel's new Santa Rosa technology. What is that? That is the code name for the updated Centrino platform. Now what is Centrino? Well that's basically a sticker that you find on your laptop. You can look for a Centrino sticker, it means that your laptop has a certain CPU, it's got good wireless connectivity. Now the new Centrino, which you'll find on the stickers that say it's a Centrino Duo or Centrino Pro, it means that the system have one of Intel's new G7000 series mobile CPU's, they've got the new Intel 965 chip set and they've got some onboard flash memory called Turbo Memory that should help with boot up times and accessing applications while you're using the system. Most of these guys also has 802.11N WiFi, which is the new fast WiFi speed. Now there's a couple interesting things about this new R61. Instead of using the default Intel Integrated Graphic, it's actually got Discreet Invidia Quantro mobile chip in there and you'll need that if you wanna get the optional Blue Ray drive which we don't have here, but will add several hundred dollars to your system price. It's also got a webcam, which is something you don't see too often in a business system and perhaps the most interesting thing is something you can't see. There's a new internal roll cage behind the lid. A middle lattice work, slightly concave, that protects the display and instead of having the full magnesium alloy back, you can have a simple composite back now and that helps your WiFi reception because full magnesium alloy chances hurt WiFi reception. And of course, being a Lenovo, which have got all the standard security features like a fingerprint reader and Lenovo's Thinkvantage built in security and troubleshooting software. This is gonna be one of the first Santa Rosa systems to hit the market and even though it doesn't look a lot different from pretty much every other Think Pad out there, there's a lot of new stuff going on under the hood. I'm Dan Ackerman and that is the Lenovo Think Pad R61. ^M00:02:00 [ music ]

Lenovo ThinkPad R61 Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Lenovo ThinkPad R61 has a wide-screen display; an internal roll cage protects the LCD; 802.11n Wi-Fi; dedicated graphics; very small AC adapter.

The bad: New Centrino technology doesn't offer outsize performance gains.

The bottom line: The IBM blueprint is still evident in the Lenovo ThinkPad R61, but the addition of a wide-screen display and all the latest Centrino Duo tricks make this a ThinkPad that could woo home users along with its legion of fans among business travelers.
