Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 Video Transcript

>> Scott: Hey, this is Scott Stein [assumed spelling], Senior Associate Editor with CNET Reviews and we've got the Lenovo IdeaPad Y650, which is a 16 inch laptop. Now, Lenovo's mostly known for its little more stay business laptops and their IdeaPad line is more consumer oriented, more for home users and the design is pretty nice, is 1 inch thick which is definitely the thinnest 16 inch laptop that we've seen and it's at 5 point 62 pounds, pretty light and it feels nice. The cover has this kind of a textured hex pattern, there's carbon fiber material, it's sort of a little bit rubberized feeling, it doesn't leave any fingerprints, there's a little nice copper strip around the edges here. You've got HDMI, VGA, USB, ESTA on the side here. On the inside very glossy white interior it sort of gives the MacBook design team a little run for its money. You have a very roomy area including a tremendous nicely textured touch-pad and some really nice 2 watt JBL speakers which do provide a Dolby simulated surround that's pretty good experience. Unfortunately, the screen while it is 16 by 9 and bright and 16 inches it's only up to 720p as far as high def resolution so you're not gonna get a 1080p experience; this is not for the Blu-Ray players. There's a touch-launcher up here which works really nicely. You can slide and bring up the programs that you want to access. There are also some automatic settings for Dolby audio and for movie theater level brightness on the screen. The model we tested comes in at $1,249, has 4G of DDR RAM and a 2 point 53GH Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. It works pretty speedily. It's also assisted with an NVIDIA graphics chip that's not really like full discrete level but it will, you know, get the job done as far as high definition video and some basic gaming will also give you a nice experience. You wouldn't really call this a gaming laptop though. I think the keyboard, unfortunately, was a little bit of a disappointment. On a system this size there's a lot of real estate where you could put a slightly larger keyboard. Putting your hands on and typing you sort of feel a little bit lost at sea especially with this blank space on the side. We maybe would have liked a little better use for that. The battery life as we tested it was not spectacular it was about 2 1/2 hours. It's not really designed to be a fully portable, you know, stay away from the outlet experience. So, you know, this is really meant to sort of sit in your living room, I guess when you get into a 16 inch laptop you're really looking for more of a multi media device and that's what this is. Again, I wouldn't recommend it as a gaming laptop, per say, but certainly for the cost, for the design, which is quite nice, and for the screen real estate and the impressive built-in audio for its size the Lenovo Y650 is a pretty stylish Windows laptop. I'm Scott Stein with CNET.com and this is the Lenovo Y650 laptop. ^E00:02:59
