LaCie 5big Thunderbolt storage device Video Transcript
Hi, guys. It's Dong Ngo here. And this is the very first 5-bay Thunderbolt storage device from LaCie, the 5Big Thunderbolt. Now, the 5-Bay mean, you're gonna have a massive mass storage and the Thunderbolt means that it can also very fast performance. And in fact, in my testing, this is one of the fastest storage device on the market. The 5Big here is not the first that come with many drive-base however. This Pegasus R6 right here, good thing I'm strong, actually come with not 5 but 6-drive base. But there's a major different between the two of them. The R6 here is actually a hardware RAID device and by it's off all time reconfiguration including RAID 5. The LaCie down here on the other hand, it's just more like an enclosure box. Meaning, by it so, it's also no RAID at all. It does provide RAID 0 or RAID 1 when working with Mac OS, however. Now, what's the benefit of not having RAID 5? The cost. The R6 up here cost $2200 and offer only 12 terabyte of storage space. The LaCie costs the same but offer 20 terabyte. In my opinion, that is a pretty good tradeoff. Now, the 5Big come in LaCie signature design which is the cubicle shape with this big, blue round ball here in front as the power starter. If you're wondering why it has to be this big, this round and this blue, you are not alone. My guess is that because LaCie is a French company, C'est la vie. On the back, the device comes with two Thunderbolt ports and a power on/off switch right here. This switch is kind of redundant because the drive actually share the power storage with the Mac is connected to. For example, you cannot turn it on without plugging in to the Mac and when plugged in, you'd go off if the Mac is off and go back on if the Mac is turned on. Above the 5-drive Bay, the 5Big come preloaded with 5 hard drive but you can easily change them using a coin right here to unlock the tray from the Bay. Note how the two-tray over here actually come with darker color than the other three, and that's because LaCie suggests that the Big 5 should be used in two separate volume. One in red zero for fast access and the other two in red one for data security. It's like having two separate device into one box. It's kinda cool. And in my testing, that dual RAID setup worked out pretty well. Now, the 5Big also come with a 10GB version that cost $1200. That is good enough for most users. Me personally, though, I would take this 20 terabyte, you know, hard bit. And that's because I'm Dong Ngo. And this has been the first look at the 5Big Thunderbolt from LaCie. Make sure you check out the full video setup come for more information and if you have a question, which a lot of you do, send them over to me via Facebook or Twitter. See you there.

LaCie 5big Thunderbolt (20GB) Review
The good: The LaCie 5big Thunderbolt is superfast and includes a Thunderbolt cable.
The bad: The 5big Thunderbolt supports just RAID 1 and RAID 0, connects solely via Thunderbolt, and, for now, only works with Macs.
The bottom line: Though it lacks RAID 5, the speedy 5big Thunderbolt is still worth the hefty investment, and is a better buy than competing devices.
