>> Hi, I'm David Conroy executive editor for CNET.com and this is the Kodak Easy Share EX 811. It's not the sexiest looking photo frame in the world. It comes in basic black. Kodak says it will offer some optional face plates eventually, but right now black is it. It's fairly straightforward, but what's interesting about it is that it has built in wireless capabilities. So, you can hook this into your wireless home network and stream photos from both your PC and more importantly Kodak's easy share gallery online. That's really the main differentiating point of this frame. Found it pretty easy to set up the wireless connectivity. We also like the interface on the frame. The frame has 128 megabytes of built in memory which is pretty good and there's also slots for adding memory cards. On top of that you can also plug in a USB thumb drive and play images off the thumb drive or transfer them to the frame. One thing we notice is that because the frame is 800 by 480 it does crop your images slightly when the photos appear on your frame. Frame comes with a small remote you have to be standing fairly close to the frame to use it. There's a sensor on the front, but it is nice to be able to control the frame as you would TV. A lot of times these little remotes are pretty easy to lose and we appreciate the fact that there is a little remote catty on back of the frame so you won't lose it. Another notable feature about the frame is that it's able to play back video as well as MP3s. There are two small speakers built into the frame. They don't sound all that good, but it's nice to be able to play back those movies you shot with your digital still camera and hear them as well. Overall we really like this frame. It's got good image quality, a good feature set and the ability to wirelessly tie into your online gallery is really key. That said, if you don't want that sort of added feature and you just want a basic frame that shows off your photos this is probably not going to be it because you do pay a little bit of a premium for those extra features. Kodak EasyShare EX-811 Digital Picture Frame Review
The good: Built-in wireless connectivity allows you to tap into your home wireless network and stream images from your Windows PC or the Kodak EasyShare Gallery online photo-sharing service. The frame has a bright, relatively sharp 8-inch diagonal display, 128MB of built-in memory, plus slots for virtually all memory card types, as well as USB connectivity for computers and thumbdrives. The EX-811 supports MP3 and video playback (with sound), ships with a small remote control, and is compatible with PictBridge-enabled printers. Lastly, it's easy to set up and has a well-designed interface.
The bad: The built-in speakers sound very tinny; when transferring photos to the display's internal memory, images aren't automatically resized to the size of the display to reduce file sizes. Music playback controls could be more straightforward.
The bottom line: While it has a few minor flaws, Kodak's Wi-Fi-enabled EX-811's strong feature set, good image quality, and online integration with the company's free EasyShare Gallery online photo-sharing service, make this frame a top choice in the digital photo frame category.
