>> Hi, I'm Mathew Moskoviciak, associate editor at cnet.com and this is the JVC LT 47X788. This is a 47-inch 1080 P flat panel LCD TV, and it's one of the more inexpensive sets we've looked at this year. Styling is one of the strong points for this set. It has a glossy black bessel [Phonetic] with a little bit of silver trim to accentuate the bottom half of the unit. The remote is also pretty good, but one thing we didn't appreciate was the unorthodox horizontally placed channel and volume buttons. It just feels a little weird in our hands. Moving on to features. The feature pack is decent, but it's a little bit less than some of the competitors. If you look around the back there are two HDMI inputs while some competitors offer three, and there are also two component video inputs. Moving on to performance, JVC certainly has an acceptable image, but it does not stack up to some of the top performing LCDs that we've looked at this year. One of the big issues we had with this TV was its black level performance, which was not as dark as you find on top-performing LCDs and on top-performing plasmas. Another problem with the black levels is the blacks tended to look a little bit red, especially in very dark scenes. And this is definitely distracting, especially if you're watching a movie with letter box bars. Another thing that was an issue was screen uniformity, as the screen did not look perfectly bright from left to right. The left and the right sides looks much brighter than the center, and this effect is also known as pillaring. All together, the JVC offers a pretty good value for the money, but discriminating viewers will be able to find better performance and features for a similar price. JVC LT-47X788 Review
The good: Relatively inexpensive; attractive styling; solid HD video processing; accurate color temperature in bright scenes.
The bad: Produces relatively light shade of black; uneven screen uniformity; only two HDMI inputs; no analog PC input.
The bottom line: The JVC LT-47X788 offers a decent value for a 1080p LCD, but discriminating viewers can find better performance and more features elsewhere for the same price.
