>> Hi, I'm Kevin Massy from CNET Car Tech and today we're taking a first look at the JVC KD-NX5000. It plays all kinds of media. As you can see, either side of the color screen are these two circular control buttons. They're actually four way rocket switches, which are the primary interface for controlling all the media functions of this unit and the navigation. For having so many functions, the face play is remarkably uncluttered. We've put in an MP3 disk, it reads it, it starts to play the audio, and we get a list of all of the id three tag information on the MP3 disk. Moving on we have a DVD audio disk here. When you put in the DVD audio disk you can look through these pretty pictures will show up. I rather like that I must say. Got a DVD here. I was pretty skeptical that we would be able to watch an entire movie on this small screen. We fired it up and you can see that this screen is bright enough in widescreen format on this screen is very visible. And it's quite possible to watch a movie. In addition to its ability to play all this disk based media, the KD-NX5000 has a built in hard drive. It has forty gigabytes of built in hard drive storage space. Sixteen of those gigabytes are used for the navigation system. The remaining twenty four are there for users, drivers, passengers, occupants of the car, to rip their own personal media library into the system. Once the tracks are in there you can then go through and edit them, an option that lets you check to see how much hard disk drive space is left for you to fill up with your own music. The switch between media and navigation, just press this mount button. You will have to enter place names letter by letter using this onscreen keypad, which can be a pain. So in terms of map resolution, we're not that impressed with this unit. You can see if I try to zoom in here, maps are pretty blocky, pretty clumsy in their resolution. For those people not satisfied with all this media storage space and the built in navigation functionality of the KD-NX5000, you can add on extra modules for Blue Tooth hands free calling, Sirius Satellite Radio and intelligent iPod control. JVC tells us that the KD-NX5000 will be available from the middle of February 2007 and will come with a price tag of nine hundred and ninety nine dollars. I'm Kevin Massy and today we've had a first look at the KD-NX5000. ^M00:02:46 [ Music ]

JVC KD-NX5000 Review
The good: The JVC KD-NX5000 combines a usable, traffic data-equipped navigation system with a plethora of audio and video capabilities in a compact package.
The bad: Its irregular size, complex menus, and rough navigation maps leave something to be desired.
The bottom line: Aside from some usability niggles resulting from its compact size, the JVC KD-NX5000 offers about as many car tech features per square foot as you can get.
