>> Antuan Goodwin: When we last saw JVCs El Kameleon and we were wishing that the unit featured a touch screen instead of just a touch pad and it looks like JVC has granted out wish. I'm Antuan Goodwin and this is your first look at a JVC El Kameleon KD-AVX77. The new El Kameleon features a super wide touch screen that occupies almost the entirety of the units faceplate. In fact the only physical controls are the almost invisible button for power and the dethatching faceplate. The El Kameleon still features a proximity sensor that can be set to reveal hidden virtual controls or power on an inactive screen as your hand approaches. All of the users interactions with the El Kameleon utilize the virtual buttons on the touch screen. The placement of these buttons can be customized as well as the colors, aesthetics and background image. The El Kameleon features a single disk optical drive that plays MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV files as well as DVD videos. Because of the screens extra wide format your movies will either be stretched, cropped or shrunk to fit the screens height which makes the El Kameleon less than ideal for extended viewing. A USB pigtail allows for the connection of iPods, iPhones and USB mass storage devices. When connected to an iPod the El Kameleon allows the access of artist, album, genre, taxonomy as well as podcast and audiobooks. Out of the box the El Kameleon doesn't feature iPod video playback but with an additional cable video playback can be added. Bluetooth hands free calling and audio streaming round out the El Kameleon's features set. Now there's a lot to like about the new El Kameleon model but it's plethora of AV inputs and outputs as well as its small oddly shaped screen make it less of an end all multimedia [background music] solution and more of a nice centerpiece to a more complex in car multimedia install. I'm Antuan Goodwin and this has been your first look at the JVC El Kameleon KDADX77. ^M00:01:57 [Music]

El Kameleon JVC EXAD KD-AVX77 media player Review

The good: The JVC KD-AVX77 El Kameleon features a customizable interface and a responsive touch screen. iPod and USB browsing is quick and easy to understand. Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming increase driver safety and add an additional audio source. A plethora of AV inputs and outputs provide many expandability options.

The bad: The superwide touch screen is too small for DVD playback and its awkward aspect ratio means that most films will be cropped, stretched, or shrunken. Gesture controls are inconsistent.

The bottom line: The JVC KD-AVX77 El Kameleon is a great receiver for system builders, but the touch-screen interface isn't as easy to use as some of the competition's physical control schemes.
