>> Hi, I'm Will Greenwald assistant editor at CNET.com and these are the JVC Everio GZ MG 255 and 555 digital camcorders. These are standard definition camcorders with 30 gigabyte hard drives that can shoot between seven and 35 hours of footage depending on the quality. Now, the MG 255 is sort of the lower end version between these two. It has a two mega pixel sensor and as you can see it is pretty much very, very simple. It works well enough. I mean you can take two mega pixel still images and it takes standard definition video that goes directly to its 30 gigabyte hard drive or to an SD card, which you can put in yourself. The MP 555 is really the upscale version of these two. It has a five mega pixel sensor, which means that you can take much larger still images. And interestingly enough this is one of the few cases where the still images on the camcorder actually look pretty good. It's not going to replace a dedicated camera, but if you just want to take snap shots while you have your camcorder out and you don't want to take out a camera, it's pretty good for just taking photos. Now, because of its high resolution for still images it has some interesting features specifically for stills including these controls, a mode dial which you usually would only see on a digital camera. It also has a [inaudible] so you can put in video lights or microphones or pretty much anything you don't need to connect to this camcorder. Both cameras have a flash, but only the MG 555 has a video light. Now there's a price difference of a few hundred dollars between these two camcorders so you really have to sort of decide your priorities. The MG 255 is a lot simpler the video quality isn't quite as good. The MG 555 on the other hand if you don't have a camera yet, it has a lot of options that surprised us when it comes to still images and it will get a little higher image quality too with the video. The good: Decent video quality; compact, easy-to-tote-around design; hard drive is convenient for both playback and editing.
The bad: No viewfinder; terrible for low-light shooting.
The bottom line: This compact camcorder offers decent video quality in adequate lighting, plus it offers the convenience of a hard drive.
