>> Hi, I'm Lori Grunin senior editor with CNET.com and this is the JVC Everio GZ HD7. This is JVCs higher end hard disc based HD camcorder. Higher end because it uses 3C CDs, unfortunately we find the video tends to stutter and jitter occasionally. The other major problem is that the optical image stabilizer doesn't. Even JVC told me that it tends to underperform. That's really too bad because there's a lot that I like about this camcorder. It's a very nice design. It's slightly bigger than the other models that we've seen, such as s the Cannon HG10. But it still feels comfortable and solidly made. One of the really nice things is that in addition to having manual controls and a very nice joy stick on the LCD you can operate this camera manually through the eye level viewfinder. You can adjust the shutter speed, the aperture, exposure etcetera. That's something that's rapidly diapering from camcorders in this class. The other slightly cheesy thing about it is the manual lens cover. One of the nice design touches is the focus assist, which turns your display to gray scale so that you can get a better since of what the sharpness level is when you're doing manual focus. It also has very nice video quality except for the stabilization and the stutter and jitter problems that I mentioned earlier, but still good exposure nice white balance good tone. So, despite the fact that there's a lot wrong with it there's just enough right with it that you still maybe want to consider it, but do keep in mind all the other caveats. The good: Nice manual features; attractive design; high-quality audio; low-noise, low-light video.
The bad: Ineffectual optical stabilizer; needs a built-in ND filter; some horizontal jitter and stuttering during playback; low-resolution video; sad battery life.
The bottom line: If this camcorder cost $500, we'd give it a much higher rating. But for its quadruple-digit price, we expect far better performance and video quality from the JVC Everio GZ-HD7.
