-Hello, I'm Dong Ngo for cnet.com at CES 2011. I have with me here the IoSafe Rugged Portable external hard drive. Now, this hard drive is actually really, really rugged. You can drop it from 20 feet, 30 feet, or let a truck run over it. You can actually shoot at it. As a matter of fact, yesterday, I was able to use a shotgun to show just how tough the drive is and the drive took 10 shots and this is how it looks after being shot at. And yes, the drive is still fully functional. Note, however, the drive is not design to be completely bulletproof so don't do that at home. The drive's chassis is a full metal jacket made of either aluminum or titanium. On the inside, you have the option of having a regular hard drive or a solid state drive. The former offers more storage and cheaper when the latter is more expensive and even more rugged but very, very expensive. The drive comes with only 1 USB 3.0 port for both these data and power connections. The IoSafe Rugged Portable is available now with price starting from $140 for the aluminum hard drive version. The price includes 1-1/2 years of free warranty. During which time, I would save with replace or repair it. You can start looking for whatever reason. Under the warranty, the company would also pay up to $5000 for the forensic like data recovery service. Once again, my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the first look at the Rugged Portable external hard drive from IoSafe.
During a demo, ioSafe let its Rugged Portable external hard drive to take about ten rounds of shotgun to prove just how rugged the drive is. The drive survived the test. Here's the video of the first shot. After this it was shot at many times more, then slammed and crushed and yet at the end, the data stored inside was still intact. The drive was actually still working and fully functional after the ordeal.
