Is The Internet In Trouble? Video Transcript
[Lesley Stahl:] Would you make the statement, "The Internet is in trouble?" [Jonathan Zittrain:] Yes, without hesitation. [Lesley Stahl:] Without hesitation. [Jonathan Zittrain:] Yes. [Lesley Stahl:] How worried are you that the public at large is going to lose trust in the Internet? [Jonathan Zittrain:] I am greatly worried about that. They lose trust in the Internet and in the PCs that are attached to it and they will migrate to alternatives that have problems at least as big as the technologies they're abandoning. [Lesley Stahl:] Is there any way to absolutely guarantee that you won't be mugged out there when you're surfing around the Web? [Jonathan Zittrain:] There are no guarantees, unless you have the prototypical computer inside a bank vault not hooked up to anything, guarded by a squadron of marines. [Lesley Stahl:] In other words there is no guarantee. [Jonathan Zittrain:] There is no guarantee. [Lesley Stahl:] Okay. [Jonathan Zittrain:] But the question might be can the threat be made manageable. [Lesley Stahl:] Are you saying that if you have anti-virus security software on your PC that that makes it manageable? [Jonathan Zittrain:] It's a good start. [Lesley Stahl:] It's a start. [Jonathan Zittrain:] It's a good start. Most people today, most security professionals would say, yes, run us some decent anti-virus software and there's some user education that has to go on. ^M00:01:17
