>>[Jessica Dolcourt:] I'm Jessica Dolcourt from CNET taking a first look at Internet Explorer Mobile 6. This is the new mobile browser that's part of the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system on Windows phones. Like the rest of the OS, Internet Explorer gets a new look, like these large navigation buttons, which were designed with fingertips in mind, not just the stylus. The buttons go back a page, take you to your bookmarks, and call up the keyboard. There's one button dedicated to a zoom slider, which is a brand-new feature here. Then there's the "more" button from which you can see additional tools. As you browse, the navigation icons fade out. Just tap the remaining button to bring them back again. The look and feel of these menus may vary depending on your phone model and carrier, but the browser will essentially work the same way on any phone. The URL bar in IE Mobile 6 doubles as a search bar. You can type a term to add a domain suffix or start a search. The search suggestions will also pull from URLs in your history and your bookmarks. The ability to switch between desktop and mobile view is also new. Here's something else we like: as you zoom and pan around a web page, a tiny box shows you where you are in relation to the rest of the page. That way, you'll never get lost. Video support with Adobe Flash Lite 3 is another new addition to IE Mobile 6, but only if your particular Windows phone supports it. You won't have any say over that; it's all up to the manufacturer. You'll be able to stream videos from sites like YouTube.com, but we prefer the media player mode instead. This plays a video in the phone's native player, which gives you more control over playback features. This browser will also support widgets. A widget app in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile will help developers start making them. So far we like all the design considerations that make browsing really straightforward. The biggest sore spot is still speed. IE Mobile 6 lagged behind Opera Mobile 9.5 in our tests, and that's both over WIFI and over the AT and T data network. And that was in multiple cities in our area. IE Mobile 6 also lacks tabbed browsing and a few more advanced searching and sharing features. So performance is still flighty compared to the competition, but casual users won't get lost. IE Mobile 6 comes preloaded on Windows Mobile 6.5 phones. Right now that's the only place you can get it.
