>> Hey everyone, I'm Jeff Backalar [assumed spelling], assistant editor here at cnet.com. Today we're gonna be looking at the i399 from iLove. The i399 is a boom box shelf system that allows you to broadcast and receive audio ove their proprietary Bluetooth adapter, which they call Bluepin. Now the 399 is the successor to the 199, and they've actually taken out a lot of features that we really liked on the last model. They've taken out USB, CD player, alarm clock, and they've taken out all iPod video out capabilities. All the 399 has is the iPod dock, the radio, and Bluetooth capabilities. iLove is also adding a speakerphone mode, which actually lets you use the entire device as a speakerphone, but it doesn't really work the way you would imagine, and it's kind of impractical to speak into a boom box when you're on the phone. The remote they included is definitely a step up from last year's model. You can even control your iPod with it. Only problem with this though is that you got to be a foot in front of the thing, because you have to read the screen on your iPod. They've also added an LED light sequence on the bottom of the device that's sensitive to bass in music. It's pretty tacky, and it's kind of annoying. But fortunately, you can turn it off. Sound quality on the 399 is really good, just like the last version. There's a lot of bass in this, there's a nice thick, heavy sound. Overall we think the i399 is good, we wish it had some of the features that the last iteration had. [ background music ] But if you're looking for a decent sounding iPod dock, here you go. I'm Jeff Backalar, and this has been the i399 from iLove. [ music ]

While the Denon S-52 is chock-full of impressive features for an iPod speaker dock/radio/Internet music player, its subpar sound quality makes it hard to justify the steep asking price.

iLuv i399 (Black, Bluetooth) Review

The good: iPod speaker with built-in subwoofer; streams wireless audio from Bluetooth sources; FM radio with 20 presets; good sound quality.

The bad: Lacks CD, USB port, alarms, and video-out options found on earlier, more affordable model; major battery requirements for portable use; shoddy speakerphone performance; tacky rhythm-sensitive LED lights; slight speaker buzz when iPod is connected.

The bottom line: While the iLuv i399 is still a solid-sounding iPod speaker dock, we wish it had held on to some of the features the made the previous model such an excellent value.
