>> Hello, this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com, and have with me there, the iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N router. This is a rather unusual router. It's the first we've seen that has a feature that requires an annual fee $59.00 to use. So what do you get for that? The most comprehensive web filter found in a home router. Basically, the router allows for managing the Internet activities for the entire network with an enormous amount of options. This means it's suited best for families with teenagers or places where access to the Internet needs to be tightly controlled. Other than that, this is a very simple wireless-N router. It has four LAN ports and one WAN port. All these ports are regular Ethernet. The router doesn't support [inaudible] Ethernet. There's no USB for printers or external storage either. On the front here, you will see an array of lights that indicate the activities of the wireless network, the connection to the Internet, and the ports of the back. The router's two antennae are located on the back, near the ports, which is not a good design. Normally, we prefer to see them on the side, away from the ports. On the inside, other than the web filter, the router has only port for [inaudible] as the only advanced networking feature. This means you can set up an FTP server or remote desktop connection with it. In CNET lab's testing, the iBoss performance was quite unimpressive. It was the second slowest wireless-N router we reviewed, and its range was also shorter than that of most wireless-N routers. On top of the annual fee, the router costs somewhere between $40.00 and $50.00. For more information on how it stacks up against other routers, check out the full review at CNET.com. Once again, my name is Dong Ngo, and this has been the First Look at the iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N router. ^M00:01:52 [ Music ]

iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N router Review

Editors' rating

The good: The iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N offers comprehensive parental control, stable performance, a responsive Web interface, and is housed in a compact design.

The bad: The iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N's throughput speed and range could be better. It lacks both Gigabit Ethernet and USB support as well as features commonly found in other Wireless-N routers. It requires an annual fee to use.

The bottom line: The iBoss Home Parental Control Wireless-N router offers the most comprehensive tool to manage access to the Internet. Beyond that, it's a rather simple router that requires an annual subscription fee to operate, therefore holding appeal only for those who want complete control over a network's online activities.
