>> Hi, this is Bonnie Cha, senior associate editor at CNET.com. And here it is, your first look at the HTC Touch. This phone is generating a lot of buzz, and someone, some are comparing it to the iPhone. And the reason why is it has this advanced touch screen. It uses this technology called Touch Flow, which lets you control the device through a series of swipes. So from the home screen you can sweep up and get to this menu right here where you can have access to your email, to the web, and other applications. If you go this way you can get to your media, and this way gets to your contacts. It's a pretty neat interface. You can also swipe down to close out of the application. Took me about maybe twenty or thirty minutes to kind of really get the gist of it. Also it knows the difference between your finger touch and if you're swiping. So if you're in email, flick up and it'll scroll through your email like that, and then you can just stop it like that as well, and you can exit out of it. There are some navigation controls down here for your talk and end keys, and then navigation toggle. And your dial pad is nice and spacious. My big problem with this is the keyboard is really small if you're a text messager, or email. I'm a huge texter, so I can't imagine myself texting with a little stylus and keyboard. Design-wise it's really nice and compact. It's probably the smallest one we've seen that has a touch screen. On the side here you have a volume rocker, and there's a SIM card slot and a micro SD slot behind here, but requires a lot of wrangling to get the cover off. Has a two megapixel camera as well, and this nice soft touch finish. Othewise it's just a Windows mobile smart phone. It's running the professional edition. You get integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It'll be available in the US second half of 2007. Whether it'll be a competitor for the iPhone I'm not sure, you know, I haven't had the chance to play with the iPhone, I don't think anyone has. But we'll see. For now, pretty cool device, but gonna need some tweaks I think before mass consumption. [ background music ] I'm Bonnie Cha, and this has been the HTC Touch. ^M00:02:04 [ music ]

HTC Touch (Unlocked) Review

The good: The compact HTC Touch features an advanced touch screen that lets you operate the smart phone with your fingertips. The Windows Mobile 6 smart phone also has an updated interface, integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and a 2-megapixel camera.

The bad: The Touch's tiny onscreen keyboard makes it a pain to enter any text, and the TouchFLO feature doesn't work in landscape mode. The SIM card and microSD slots are hard to access. Also, speakerphone quality was poor, and the device can be sluggish at times.

The bottom line: The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. And despite the beautiful hardware, the Windows Mobile smart phone lags in performance and needs a bit more tweaking before we're ready to snatch one up.
