>> Hi I'm Felicia Yang, Associate Editor with cnet.com. Today we're taking a look at the HP Photosmart A826 stand alone photo printer. This is an Editor's Choice winner and while we've looked at lot of stand alone photo printers, this is the first one that really tries to bring the in-store photo kiosk experience into your home. There are a lot of differences between this one and a lot of the other photo printers we've looked at. The first thing you notice is the size. It's really large and it kind of invites you to display it like in your living room or in another public area of your house. I really like the esthetic of it too, the kind of pouched key smooth, rounded edges. While you can connect your printer to this PC, it's really designed for stand alone use. You'll see in front here we have four media card slots and a USB Pitch Bridgeport for digital cameras and camera phones. So when you insert a memory card it automatically calls up a nine image thumbnail shot here; and you can use your stylus or your finger and you can click around. If you want to choose multiple photos, you can click on this little checkbox here; or if you want to work with a specific photo larger, you can simply click on the middle and it brings up the large view. In our labs test this printer did a really great job. It's fast and it produces really great quality photos so we really liked it, and the only big drawback as far as we're concerned is the price. It's 250 dollars which is a lot of money for a printer that does only photos and no documents and things like that. HP designates this as a busy mom printer but we're not really seeing that. We think people are taking lots of photos but they're not necessarily printing them all. They're sharing them online and distributing them in other ways. What we see is maybe like a wedding photographer or a professional party planner buying one of these, taking them to events and displaying them there. Overall though we really, really like this printer. It's a lot of fun to use, it's really ease to use and it let's you get really creative with your photos which we liked and which is why we gave it an Editor's Choice Award. HP Photosmart A826 Review
The good: Fast, high-quality prints; lots of fun features such as clip art and captions; per-print costs are in line with other snapshot printers' costs; touch screen is easy to use and great for displaying slide shows; menus are logically organized.
The bad: Expensive; album options are a bit limited.
The bottom line: The HP Photosmart A826 snapshot printer offers an attractive design, is easy and fun to use, and works better without a PC than any other snapshot printer we've reviewed thanks to its huge touch screen, but we wonder who will spend $250 for a dedicated photo printer.
