>> Justin: Hey, it's Justin Yu, Assistant Editor for CNET.com and we're here to take a first look at the HP Pavilion Elite m9500y. Now it's one of HP's latest preconfigured mid-range desktop PC's sold exclusively through Best Buy. So for around 950 bones you get a relatively decent collection of components, for example, a 2.4GH quad core processor, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, a competitive graphics card and 750G of storage space. That all sounds pretty good, right, well, pretty much until you put it up against its two biggest competitors Dell and Gateway both of those companies offer two better systems for less money. But before we get into that let's take a quick look at the chassis. Now if you saw our review for the HP Pavilion Elite m9402f you'll recognize these two irritatingly proprietary hard drive bays the larger of which cramping a huge portion of this system's interior and adds several superfluous wires as well. But on the positive end you do get a maximum 8GB of memory that should set you sailing through applications for the foreseeable future. Now we were talking about comparison systems earlier and our competitive testing made one fact very clear; this HP just can't hold its own against other systems. Gateway has one, for example, that gives you a faster graphics card for smoother game play and Dell has one that benefits from a notably faster CPU. Now to drive the point home even further both of those are actually cheaper than this HP. Now be sure to read our full review for all the juicy details and thanks for watching. I'm Justin Yu and you just took a first look at the HP Pavilion Elite m9500y. ^E00:01:40

HP Pavilion Elite m9500y Review
The good: Decent component selection; built-in Wi-Fi.
The bad: Other desktops have better components for less money; forgettable chassis design with two proprietary drive bays; smaller case means less room for expansion.
The bottom line: We can't complain about the HP Pavilion Elite m9500y in its current configuration--it offers a speedy processor, plenty of memory and storage, and even includes Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the big picture shows other manufacturers like Dell and Gateway that offer better deals to fit your specific computing needs.
