>> I'm Dan Ackerman, and we're here taking a look at HP's new Pavilion DV2. Now this laptop is notable for one particular reason, and that is because it is the first system that we've seen with AMD's new Athlon Neo CPU. Now what is that? That's a new chip from AMD designed to sort of be a step up from the Intel Atom processor, and that's the one you find in all those little Netbooks. It's meant for systems that are a little bit more expensive, a little bit bigger. But the problem with this thinking is what do you get when you take a Netbook and you make it a little bit more expensive and a little bit bigger? Well you just get a regular laptop. And there are a ton of really good bargains in like the seven hundred dollar range where this guy is, and all those systems have regular Intel core 2 duo CPU's that'll totally kill something like this on performance. So what the Neo lets you do is it lets you build a system that's actually a little bit thinner, a little bit lighter, you can fit it into this twelve inch chassis. There's only a handful of inexpensive twelve inch systems out there, but psychologically, when you kind of get past that ten inch Netbook size into the eleven and twelve inch systems, you kind of feel like it's more of a mainstream computer, you want it to do more. But these single core Netbook style chips really aren't suited for that. So after all that, how did the new Athlon Neo CPU do? Well it was faster than the Intel Atom in some of our tests, but when it came to multitasking, running multiple programs at the same time, something none of these low powered chips are particularly good at, it was only about the same as the Atom. Now compared to an ultra low voltage dual core processor [inaudible] which is what you're gonna find in really expensive ultra portables, like systems from Lenovo or Sony, that just totally blows these out of the water, but you're gonna pay fifteen hundred dollars or more for one of these systems. HP Pavilion dv2 Review

The good: First laptop to use new AMD Athlon Neo CPU; best-looking budget 12-inch laptop we've seen; 4GB of RAM.

The bad: Netbook-style performance at mainstream-laptop prices; no internal optical drive; unimpressive battery life.

The bottom line: HP's slick-looking 12-inch Pavilion dv2 carves out a niche between entry-level Netbooks and expensive ultraportables.
