>> Dan Ackerman: Dan Ackerman here at CES 2009 with what may be my favorite of the new batch of Netbooks. This is the HP Mini 2140. Now we saw this kind of big keyboard format on a Netbook back with HP's Mini 1000. That was a plastic Netbook from a couple of months ago. This new model from HP's business side improves on that a lot. It's got this solid brush metal construction which feels a lot sturdier than your standard plastic Netbook. It's got an Ethernet jack which is something that the Mini 1000 lacked which I found out the other day when I went to a place which only had hard wires and I couldn't plug in. And get this: it's got a full express card 54 slot. That's the first time we've seen that in a Netbook. Lenovo's S10 has an express card 34 slot, but if you have something like a mobile broadband modem or something you want to plug in here, you've got the full express card 54 right there. Inside it's got fairly standard Netbook components: an Intel Atom CPU, 1 gig of RAM, Windows XP. And even with the solid metal construction, it's not going to cost a heck of a lot more than your standard 500 dollar plastic Netbook. I'm Dan Ackerman from CES 2009 and that is the HP Mini 2140.

HP's Biz-minded Mini 5101 is a worthy successor to the Mini 2140 (one of our all-time favorite Netbooks). It looks and feels great, but for a premium-priced Netbook, we expect it to have more features, not less.

HP 2140 Mini-Note Review
The good: Solid metal construction; full ExpressCard/54 slot; big keyboard.
The bad: Odd resolution loses a few pixels; no mobile-broadband options (yet); awkward mouse button placement.
The bottom line: HP offers a premium version of its plastic Mini 1000 while keeping the price down, making the Mini 2140 the Netbook to beat.
