Hi. I'm Scott Stein, Senior Editor of CNET.com. Now, the ultrabooks of CES have come and gone and there are gonna lot more ultrabooks still to come. But one of the most interesting solid and reliable ones you've seen so far this year, is the HP Folio 13. Now, this is a small business oriented laptop. It's technically an ultrabook although what is an ultrabook anyway at this point. The lines are getting so blurred. It's hard to figure it out. What this is a 13-inch thin laptop with SSA storage like a MacBook Air except thicker than a MacBook Air and heavier than a MacBook Air. What you are getting here is a more affordable price, 899 at it's starting which compared to that 1,200 or so price of a MacBook Air, it's much more affordable deal and you get a 120 GB of SSD storage, 4 GB of RAM and you get that same zippy type of core i5 processor that's low voltage, but feels very nice and functionally fast on these types of laptops. You'll also get a battery that last about 6 hours which is really good, maybe not quite as good as a MacBook Air, but approaching it. And you also get more ports on this. Check out the ethernet. Also USB 3.0 and an SD card slot. A lot of those are missing on a lot of other ultrabooks creating a bit of a disconnect. Actually, taking this one at the CES was kind of fun because the ethernet port made it a little more reliable for landlines. Now, it is gonna take up more room in your backpack, but it's a little over 3 lbs and it's still pretty light compared to other laptops, so it depends on what your comparing it to. It has a small business type feel. The brush metal lid, kinda of a slightly no non-sense design, but you know what? It pay attention to the details particularly the fact that it doesn't feel very flexi at all. It has a nice rubberized bottom, so it stays. Put on your desk if you're typing a lot and the keyboard is really nice. It's full size. It has some nice key travel. Felt really good when typing and the track pad is pretty large and use a multi-touch with a click pad type on it. Now, everything is you know kind of far for the course, integrated graphics. The speakers are fine. The webcam's maybe a little better than average. Where do you use this things for? You're using it to write, you're using to get online, the start up time, the boot up time on this is really fast and the cold boot up time from sleep or hibernation when you lift the lid was also really zippy and functional. It doesn't make a slight roaring sound when you're using it for a while because you're playing with those cool sense controls for cooling. Maybe you can find a perfect middle zone for yourself. Overall at 899, it's a really good value and probably one of the best feeling writing ultrabooks that we've seen or I've seen in the past year. Now, if you wanna pay a little bit more or spend a $150 for Windows 7 Professional, you can, but really at that 899 price it's really got basically everything that you're looking for. I'm Scott Stein and that's a quick look at the HP Folio 13, a business ultrabook.
It's a Prizefight punchout between two of the top ultrabooks on the market. Will the HP Folio 13 stand a chance against Dell's XPS 13 and its sleek design?
The HP Pavilion dv1000 is a solid and sensibly priced system for students, families, and small-business users who want to work and play on the road.
In this video, Scott Looker of Scott and the Riders plays a lovesick traveler in Memphis who meets someone on a train.
Although Seagate BlackArmor is difficult to use for networking novices, it is a good choice for small-business and advanced users.
Thecus N4200 is a fast and reliable storage and backup server for small-business environments. However, its lack of some advanced features, its high learning curve, and the relatively high price might turn away those who want to get the most out of a NAS server.
With a set of features and connections suitable for the small-business user, the Lenovo 3000 N100 delivers strong components and performance at a competitive price.
The HP Photosmart C5180 all-in-one is almost perfect for your small-business or home setup, but it lacks a good fax feature.
Would a little night typing make your iPad writing sessions better? Zagg's keyboard case is a solid package.
Dell's latest slim small-business laptop, the Vostro V130, has an attractive design and features that could easily appeal to anyone looking for a thin portable.
The small-business-targeted Dell Vostro 3300 is a compact, stylish-looking laptop selling at a price that's reasonable. If it had a more robust battery, this would be an excellent travel companion.
HP Folio 13 Review
The good: The HP Folio 13 has everything that matters most in an ultrabook: very good battery life, an excellent backlit keyboard, all the requisite ports for mobile use, and a very comfortable feel, along with a competitive entry-level price.
The bad: The Folio 13 is no looker compared with other ultrabooks, and is a bit thicker and heavier than thin laptops such as the MacBook Air. The clickpad's just a bit too finicky for our tastes, too.
The bottom line: When it comes to Windows ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13 is the best of the bunch in terms of performance, price, and ergonomics, provided you can live with a less-than-razor-thin design. This laptop is targeted at small businesses but it's really for anyone who wants a reliable ultrabook that isn't a MacBook Air.
