>> [Brian Cooley:] I'm Brian Cooley with a how-to on taking better pictures by using the rule of thirds. Now your photo-taking instinct is probably to take the picture with the subject right in the middle of the shot. But that might not be the most interesting composition. Instead, try the rule of thirds. Imagine your viewfinder as divided into thirds, horizontally and vertically. In fact, some cameras can even superimpose those lines right on the LCD viewfinder. But either way, then position your subject at one of the intersection points or filling one of the top, bottom, left or right bands. It creates interesting imbalance, and once you get the hang of it, you can help tell a story by leading the viewer's eye across or into the photo. Best of all, it takes no technology.
