Video description: When hip-hop began its attack on mainstream culture in the mid-80's, it found itself in some pretty strange neighborhoods. It started to influence kids that the music was never intended for. Shows like Yo! MTV Raps and national tours from Run DMC brought rap music to uncharted territories never thought of during its birth in the projects. This is when the suburbs discovered rap music. And so did Hot Karl. Hot Karl, born Jensen-Gerard Karp (23), grew up in Calabasas, CA, a secluded suburb only a few miles away from the Malibu beaches. He listened to N.W.A. and Slick Rick, never relating to their subject matter or lifestyle, but loving the artform. It wasn't long before Karl began writing his own lyrics, hiding it from his affluent neighbors who still looked down at rap music and its possibilities. Karl continued to write lyrics, enter battles and freestyle at USC (where he graduated Cum Laude 2001), creating the Hot Karl persona. This is when Karl decided to call into a Los Angeles radio show to rap on the Roll Call competition, where he lasted a record 30 days on air to become the all-time champion and create a surprising buzz in LA. As managers and labels began to call, Karl created a demo exhibiting his style of witty satire and tight rhymes with help from Limp Bizkit's DJ Lethal. Karl weighed out his options from the firestorm of interest and eventually signed with Interscope Records, where he created what was to be his debut CD. "Your Housekeeper Hates You? included guest appearances by Redman, Fabolous, DJ Quik, Mya, Sugar Ray, DJ Clue and MC Serch. Once Interscope informed Karl that his CD could not be commercially released due to ?scheduling conflicts,? he asked for his immediate release, hoping to return to his underground roots and stay away from this corporate side of the music industry that he slowly began to hate. As Karl continues his attempt to "make hip-hop fun," he never focuses on the morbid world of rap and violence that continue to prove strong sales. "I'm only going to speak about things I know," Karl explains. "My keeping it real is much different than most other MC's." Karl has recently signed with EMI Publishing and found his music (as well as likeness) in the video game, NBA Live 2003, proving that leaving a major label is hardly an ending - but rather just another beginning. It's gonna be a fun ride as Karl attempts to introduce his upbringing and signature humor to the culture of hip-hop. It's time to realize the magnitude of rap music's influence, as well as time for some unlikely voices to have their chance.

Suicide City: "Give Me Your Pity"

Suicide City began when the passionately focused Billy Graziadei met the kinetically energetic singer Karl Bernholtz while producing his band, the Groovenicks from south Florida. Graziadei then brought in session drummer Danny Lamagna, who was soon joined by fellow Groovenicks guitarist AJ Marchetta. After meeting female powerhouse bassist Jennifer Arroyo while on the road with Kittie, Graziadei pledged to one day join forces with this beautifully intense woman! The dream team was complete. With mounting obligations and impractical geography between them, Suicide City's seedling stage might have been a logistical nightmare, but as Marchetta says, "nothing good comes easy." Suicide City's first disc, Not My Year, utterly masters hydrologic speed, sleek melodies and bewildering aggression all encompassed in several hues of tragic beauty. Perhaps when Jennifer described what being in SUICIDE CITY meant to her, she also tapped into what people can expect to experience in this murderous metropolis."Being able to have no limitations and no boundaries," declares Jennifer. Graziadei further explains the five-piece's integrity-filled maxim, "Suicide City is not influenced by what is the trend of the day! My influences effected me at an early age, growing up with the Misfits, the Cure, Minor Threat, the Beatles, Joy Division, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin." Indeed, Suicide City houses the poisonous poetry of the Cure, the stabbing rhythm section of the Misfits and a smoldering addictive quality that made the Beatles the legends that they are. Add in the fact that Jennifer grew up listening to metal and hardcore, you get some insight as to what this riveting and magnetic outfit delivers, but it also begs the question: what's in a name? Graziadei points to our society's destructive pathology. "People put themselves through so much abuse; physically, mentally, emotionally, economically, it's all suicide! We live in a world where people continually destroy their souls in the name of vanity, is this sane? When you remove 'want' out of your vocabulary and concentrate on 'need,' life becomes much easier to bare!" And speaking of destructive pathologies, singer Bernholtz defines Suicide City performances as, "a sweet ass train wreck.", while Jennifer draws parallels to their live show as being an orgasm!

Eternia: "Evidence"

Hip Hop artist Eternia has graced the cover of Toronto's "The Eyeopener," Vancouver's "Terminal City," and Sydney Australia's "Homebase." All three magazines had one thing in common: they saw in Eternia a fiery commitment to succeed and growing star potential. If Eternia's unrelenting drive and incomparable skill is any indication, it will not be long before the rest of the world scrambles for the coattails of this lyrical phenomenon. Meet Canada's answer to: 'Who's Got Next?' For twenty-five years Eternia has contributed to the positive musical vibrations around her. Born to parents who were extremely musically inclined, she began performing in church as a toddler, and continued throughout her teens. At age eight she was introduced to the culture that would captivate her for life: Hip Hop. Eternia started reciting lyrics, and before long, she was scribing her own extraordinary material. However, it was just a hobby until 1994, when she decided to take emceeing seriously; from local stages to radio stations - no microphone has been safe ever since. Eternia has tightened her skills in street ciphers, studio sessions, and live shows. She?s rocked rhymes from crowded subway cars in the Bronx, to ciphers outside of the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe (Manhattan), to street corners in Philadelphia. Eternia honed her stage presence at a variety of N.Y.C. venues including Wetlands, S.O.B.?s, Bowery Ballroom, and Baby Jupiter, which grew to performances across the U.S.A. in every major city/state mentionable. In Canada, she?s rocked crowds and rhymed on campus radio stations from Halifax, N.S. all the way to Vancouver, B.C. In 2003, Eternia extended her musical experience overseas, where Australia proved to be fruitful ground for her vivacious lyrical passion. Following a slew of successful singles, videos & feature releases including ?Work it Out?, ?Sorrow Song? (Universal/Maple), ?Understand if I? (Battle Axe Records), & ?Just the Way it Is? (Urbnet), and the Australian national chart-topper ?Movin?? (Warner), Eternia released ?Where I Been ? The Collection? in spring 2005, a mix CD of Eternia?s past releases, exclusive drops, unreleased material, international collaborations, and fresh singles. The Collection served to prepare the public for her Debut Full-Length Album, ?It?s Called Life?, funded by FACTOR Canada and executive-produced by Eternia. The highly anticipated album was released across Canada and in Australia this October, 2005. A graduate in Broadcast Journalism and Sociology from Ryerson University, Eternia?s work ethic and commitment to her craft is unparalleled in the urban music industry. As an emcee, Eternia's focus is potent content, along with innovative lyricism, delivery and style. "I write life music. Sometimes I'm criticized for being too negative or too dark. I'm inspired by my family and personal relationships, and that stuff isn't always happy at times," she says. "It's amazing when you see your fans in the crowd react to lyrics, like 'That?s exactly how I was feeling!' That's why I make music, I want to affect people."

Copeland: "Pin Your Wings"

"Strip away all the fluff. Does the song still speak the same way when performed with just a voice and a single piano or single guitar?? This is Copeland?s test of a well written song. Lead vocalist and principal songwriter, Aaron Marsh was bred in the diverse Florida music scene where he started the band with his close friend, bassist James Likeness. During their search to finish off the line-up, Aaron found a kindred spirit in Maryland native guitarist Bryan Laurenson, with a mutual appreciation of quality pop melodies to push his writing to new levels. With a concerted effort to weave memorable melodies with insightful lyrics, the band began crafting their intelligent brand of anthemic pop songs in 2000. Atlanta producer, Matt Goldman engineered Copeland?s first release in late 2000. This split EP with glam pop band Pacifico, not only earned Copeland some music industry attention, but also their first national audience in the form of a half dozen small East Coast US tours. For that first year, the band excitedly played in any venue that would have them, for whoever wanted to listen. This deep appreciation for their supporters has stuck with them as they?ve begun to see bigger tours. In the summer of 2002, Copeland signed a record deal with So-Cal independent label The Militia Group and started making plans to focus on the band full time. The band felt it was in need of a fresh start in a new scene. They relocated to Atlanta in the fall. This location seemed more conducive to full time touring and closer to producer Matt Goldman?s studio where they would start a 2 month recording session for their debut full length album. The fruit of those two months was their acclaimed opus entitled ?Beneath Medicine Tree.? Tragically beautiful, and emotionally charged with themes of love, loss, and hope, the album delighted Copeland?s small existing following and earned the band a quickly growing audience. Copeland hit the road with a rigorous tour schedule, hopping from one tour to another with the likes of Switchfoot, The Juliana Theory, The Early November, Hopesfall, Mae, and countless others. They stayed on tour for an exhausting 15 months, playing over 400 shows in that time, but not just playing music every night. Every different city became a chance to meet a new group of kids at the show. Whether playing 4-square in front of the venue, eating dinner after the show, or hanging out at the merchandise table talking about music, Copeland was always excited to turn their fans into their friends. In December of 2003, during a short break from the road, Copeland took a week to record a covers EP to be released before they begin work on their follow-up to ?Beneath Medicine Tree.? Aaron said about the EP, ?We wanted to give our supporters something to listen to while we worked on another record. We knew it might take us a while and we didn?t want everyone to forget about us. These were all songs that we grew up listening to that we thought we could bring something new to.? The EP, entitled ?Know Nothing Stays the Same,? features Copeland?s renditions of songs by Stevie Wonder, Carly Simon, Phil Collins, Berlin, and Billy Joel. Copeland released their second full-length album, "In Motion", in March of 2005. It was produced by Matt Goldman and Aaron Marsh. Ken Andrews mixed the album. The band has been touring around the world in support of the record. This fall, they will be touring in England and all over the United States. Look for them in other continents in the coming months.

Armagideon: "Blow"

WRITTEN BY UNDERGROUND RAPPER ARMAGIDEON. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is not known for breeding hit emcees as it is a house hold name for brewing the beer that stretches from sea to shining sea. Armagideon has managed to shine through the stereotypes as he set to release his debut album Tryin' Times. The twenty-three year old artist could quite easily be the Midwest's best kept secret. Beginning his musical journey on his front porch writing rhymes and break dancing at the tender age of twelve, Armagideon paid his dues as a member of Kings Paradice Records. For over a decade Kings Paradice Records has been the Milwaukee/Chicago hip hop source for innovative artists and quality hip hop products. Armagideon began as a roady, selling merchandise and towing his writing skills. Now, Armagideon is getting a taste of his dreams by touring constantly, by self marketing and distributing his own product. Armagideon has performed with the likes of neighboring emcee Common, veteran artists Whodini and Afrika Bamm. Eager to succeed, Armagideon has taken advantage of every single opportunity to shine. During a Common concert, Common asked the crowd, "Does Milwaukee have any real emcees?" Before Common could finish his sentence Armagideon catapulted himself to the stage and before he could realize what was happening, he was rapping along side one of his favorite artists. Other notable opening performances by Armagideon include Dead Prez, KRS ONE, Lil Webbie, Professor Griff, Erykah Badu, Mike Jones, Black Eyed Peas, N.E.R.D.and Young Bloodz. The sound is original and the lyrics have substance, a perfect combination that is sure to promise a bright future for this young artist. Armagideon's Lyrics are in his words, "a piece of my experience and people of the struggle across the Globe...I have traveled to Cuba, Jamaica and Peru and no matter where I go struggle is struggle and poverty is poverty, I have to be that voice." Working with selfless dedication to his message, he spills his heart out in songs like "Shine" and "Crazy Lady". Overall Armagideon's sound is a breath of fresh air from all the emcee battles, bling bling and murder music. It is hip hop in it's truest form and if you can appreciate authenticity then you will love the musical message of Armagideon. for more info visit http://www/myspace.com/gideonsarmy
