Video description: Head-nod with finesse? Or is that rock with finesse? Philadelphia-based artist, Hezekiah intends on redefining the boundaries of hip-hop with his debut long player, Hurry Up and Wait on Soulspazm Records. Scheduled for release in the beginning of 2005, Hurry up and Wait is a multi-layered soundscape of rich yet breathable melodies, powerful wordplay and punctuating percussion. While the album will have its fair share of notable guests (including Bahamadia, Grand Agent, Santi White (Stiffed), and Scratch (Legendary Roots Crew) the bulk of the album is intended to give its author's namesake the long overdue shine Hezekiah has been after for some time. Raised just south of Philadelphia in Delaware, Hezekiah grew up in the home of his mother and father where the sounds of Otis Redding, Bo Diddley and countless other blues records were in constant rotation on the hi-fi. Young and impressionable, Hezekiah soaked up the sounds of his musically trained family, and began to develop a love for music and eventually a sound of his own. But where Hezekiah would differ from the musicians in his family, would be in the adoption of digitally-based samplers, sequencers and synthesizers; the proverbial stew of hip-hop music. Hezekiah worked up the ranks within the Philadelphia underground hip-hop scene through his perseverance and talent as an emcee. Recognized for his exceptional live stage performances, Hezekiah continued to build his reputation as an influential artist working with many local independents. Indeed staying true to his diverse musical roots, Hezekiah was none too afraid to challenge as many genres of music he could, leading him to work with some of Philadelphia's most talented performers including R&B duet, the Jazzyfatnastees, Bahamadia, and Aaries. Most recently, Hezekiah received an invitation from Dawn Thompson (sister of Ahmir Thompson of The Roots), to co-produce the score for an episode of the Showtime Network's original series Street Time. Hezekiah continues to broaden his musical scope, dabbling in all aspects of art and business including emceeing, producing, singing as well as organizing the live hip-hop producer's roundtable, Beat Society. As a venerable do-it-yourself mastermind, it's no surprise that his new album carries the title, Hurry up and Wait; a reference Hezekiah says any independent artist can relate to, as the trials of making things happen on your own terms (without a major label) tend to wear on the creative mind. But be that as it may, Hezekiah accepts the challenge, and looks forward to the release of his first full length album. As a means to endure the long stretch to the finish, Hez continues to enjoy the ride of his own funky drum line, on a road that is none too short of adventures in synthesized harmony.

Wax Poetic: "Swing Swing"

With the desire to express yet another facet of his musical persona, one that would explore with density the boundaries between jazz, rock, pop and world music, it was decided to record with guitarist/arranger Thor Madsen, drummer Jochen Rueckert, bassist Jesse Murphy and songstress Marla Turner . These, with Ilhan on tenor and keyboard would be the latest incarnation of a continuing project known as Wax Poetic. The pun intended, Wax Poetic was both to go vinyl and to be an armature on which to drape the mnemosonic and dreamy cinematic soundscapes that ilhan sought. Think Dance of the Penguins. Earlier incarnations of the project including a then?unknown Norah Jones, N'dea Davennport and Saul Williams. Skating on glass, dancing on twigs, exploring crisp edges of dub and electronica, this version of the band continues in a tradition begun some 6 years ago. Characteristic of Wax Poetic's web of voice and the effusive persuasion of Thor's and Ilhan's electronic meanderings through levels of the band's id are the pulsating bass of Murphy and the chugging, rock steady backbeats of Rueckert. Says singer Marla Turner, "I don't want to sound like anybody else. I just want to do what I'm doing. That's why I'm with Wax Poetic." In response to comparisons to bands like Thievery Corporation or tenor riffs that conjure those of John Coltraine on electronics, Ilhan has said "There are always going to be influences. You hear them, you reconfigure them and you arrive at something new. That is what I want to do with all my bands, and particularly with Wax Poetic. I wanted a vocally?led situation - you know, songs - and a little improvisation with the emphasis on sound rather than on solos. In fact there is actually not that much saxophone except as obligato behind the band and Marla. It's mostly keyboards with Thor's guitar and beats added to Jochen's, with Jesse's bass. If we happen to sound like somebody or remind you of somebody, maybe we meant that to happen and maybe we didn't. I guess that is the price of being contemporary, you hear things and you accept them or reject them in accordance with what you intend to project. Sometimes it's not what you intended, but I think - insofar as I even do think about it - that that is what makes it art."

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss: "Raising Sand"

The musical collaboration of the decade, Raising Sand is the sound of two iconic figures stepping out of their respective comfort zones and letting their instincts lead them across a brave new sonic landscape. Despite hailing from distinctly different backgrounds, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant share a maverick spirit and willingness to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. This spirit, expertly honed by producer T Bone Burnett, has resulted in an album pitched three steps beyond some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country, and the untapped potential of the folk-rock revolution. Supported by the unparalleled musicianship of Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, Mike Seeger, Jay Bellerose, Norman Blake, Greg Leisz, Patrick Warren, and Riley Baugus, Plant and Krauss - as both solo and harmony vocalists - tackle an intriguing selection of songs from such tunesmiths as Tom Waits, Gene Clark, Sam Phillips, Townes Van Zandt, The Everly Brothers, and Mel Tillis. Raising Sand finds Robert Plant and Alison Krauss exploring popular music's elemental roots while still sounding effortlessly, breath-takingly contemporary.

The Knife: "Silent Shout"

Hot Swedish electro artists The Knife?s third studio album Silent Shout will be in stores on July 25th. Moving between realms, from highly danceable to tightly intimate spaces, theirs is music left of center and on the avant tip. Silent Shout, The Knife's third album, debuted at #1 on the Swedish charts. Mute will release Silent Shout, The Knife's first domestic release on July 25, 2006. "Silent Shout," the first single and title track, will be released on 12" and CD June 27, 2006 and features remixes from Shinedoe, Troy Pierce and more. Brother and sister, Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson, began making music together as The Knife in 1999, releasing records under their label Rabid Records. Deftly utilizing technology to strip, break down, defile, rebuild, and renew, their self-titled debut album The Knife, released in 2001, was followed by a soundtrack for the independent film Hannah med H, and their second artist album, Deep Cuts, both in 2003. The Knife is also famously responsible for penning ?Heartbeats?, a soul-tugging track made popular by Mute label-mate (and fellow Swede) Jose Gonzalez.

Saints of Eden: "Overload"

Goth, Techno, Metal, Industrial hybrid sound. Taken from the album 'Overload' on Metech Recordings

Morrissey: "You Have Killed Me"

Ringleader of the Tormentors is a savagely alive record. Recorded at Forum Music Village in Rome with long-term hero Tony Visconti (who produced favorite records for T-Rex and David Bowie, during their most creative periods of the 60s and 70s), the album positively crackles with fire. It is, for instance, a far more direct and rocking record than Quarry, which aside from Irish Blood, English Heart, was a self-consciously beautiful, and largely symphonic, record.

Boom Boom Satellites: "Moment I Count"

Boom Boom Satellites first surfaced in Europe in 1997. They've taken Japan by storm many times, and have toured with Moby, Underworld, and remixed artists such as Garbage and Josh Wink. Philosophically pursuing the spiritual world, while at the same time having an energy that is physical and untamed, Boom Boom Satellites' sound is a blend between the roughness of rock and meticulously calculated programming. "FULL OF ELEVATING PLEASURES," their first US release in almost 7 years, is a gospel rock 'n roll album that moves beyond the traditional boundaries of electronic music. The throbbing 12-song track list includes "Dive for you," the theme song for the much talked about anime feature film "APPLESEED." It's an album that suggests the unveiling of a new chapter in the history of Boom Boom Satellites.
