>> Hi, I'm Donald Bell senior editor for digital audio and MP3 here at CNET. Today we're taking our first look at the Griffin Amplifi iPod Speaker System. The Amplifi is a two point one speaker system. It's got two tweeters in the front, it's got a five inch subwoofer on the bottom, and it really is just focused on being a really great sounding iPod speaker system with not a lot of bells and whistles, not a lot of frills. Its biggest attribute is that it looks great, it's got a great price at around one hundred and forty nine dollars, and it's capable of getting really loud and sounding still really good when it gets loud. And when we test a lot of these speaker systems, usually we'll crank it to see exactly how loud it gets. We cranked it all the way up and it still sounded really good. The back of the Amplifi, there's really not a lot going on. You don't have any kind of video output, you don't have like a sub output, not a lot of frills, again, on the Amplifi. You've got this nice aluminum knob on the front here that's a push to power volume knob. It's a little bit wobbly for how solid it looks. The entire system is made out of like a really solid wood construction with a nice metal grill on the front. Very solidly constructed. Even though it lacks features it does come with a pretty nice IR remote control with just very basic features for power, volume, play, pause, track skip, those kind of features. Remote control works in a range of about thirty feet, which is really nice, it was pretty responsive. It's a really basic system, it sounds great even at loud volumes. Amplifi is meant to do just one thing well which is get loud and sound good and does that. So I'm Donald Bell and that was a first look at the Griffin Amplifi iPod Speaker System. ^M00:01:42 [ Music ]

Griffin Amplifi Speaker System w/ iPod Dock Review
The good: The Griffin Amplifi looks expensive despite its bargain price tag and can really blast out full, powerful sound without any noticeable distortion. Auxiliary line-input allows for use with non-iPod players as well.
The bad: Compared with other iPod speaker systems, the Amplifi is bulky, devoid of features, and lacks some sonic sparkle.
The bottom line: The aptly named Amplifi has a singular purpose--getting your iPod to really crank without putting a hole in your wallet.
