>> Rich: Hi, I'm Rich Brown, Senior Editor for CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Gateway One ZX6810-01. So this is Gateway's first Windows 7 all-in-one PC. Now like most all-in-ones we'll see coming out this fall this system has a touch-screen. But pull down its corner here and get to Gateway's customized touch interface. Now you see that that animation was a little bit slow and, in fact, we're not that happy with some of the touch capabilities of this system. We found a few that have crashed and the touch was a little unresponsive. Fortunately though there's a lot more to this system than touch. So you can see there's a few apps here, there's a globe app, there's some painting apps, there's this kind of koi pond that's common to all Windows 7 multi-touch systems. There's nothing too revolutionary here so we'll just give you this basic overview and get to the rest of the system. You can see it's a nice big 23 inch display and for $1,349 that's roughly competitive as far as screen size and price. But more interestingly Gateway has got a quad core chip in here as well as a semi decent graphics card, so performance for this thing is really outstanding for its category. It's not quite as fast as an iMac for multitasking but for every other type of program including gaming the Gateway's actually faster and less expensive. Now, we don't want to hand Gateway any awards too early because this is the first Windows 7 all-in-one we've seen and there's gonna be plenty coming out in the next few weeks. So there's some other unique features inside. Gateway has 2 hard drives in here including a solid state drive which has an operating system and most of the applications on it so it speeds up load times and we have a nice big 1 tera byte traditional hard drive for general data storage. There is a DVD drive in here, there's no Blu-ray player which is maybe a little disappointing at this price especially considering that there is actually a TV tuner in here. And we would probably rather trade the TV tuner for a Blu-ray drive. There's a couple of USB slots over here, there's a few USB slots in back as well as an Ethernet output, analog audio jacks and the TV tuner, like we mentioned. There's also an eSATA port but there's no separate video out. That's probably okay in a system with a screen as big as this one. On the other side of the case you can see there's a slot loading DVD drive, analog audio parts for headphone and mic, a media card reader as well as a button that controls the little light on the bottom of the system that shines on the keyboard if you want to type in the dark. Of course you get the ambiguous webcam up at the top here, and really that's about it. We're sort of missing some of the features that we like to see in all-in-ones these days including dedicated buttons for powering the screen on and off as well as controlling the volume and brightness. And there's also no VESA mount on the back which means you can't wall mount this system, so that's a little bit frustrating. But, again, Gateway has really made a performance play here so while we give it credit for standing out as far as day to day productivity. So I'm Rich Brown; this is the Gateway One ZX6810-01. ^M00:02:59 [ Music ]

Gateway One ZX6810-01 Review

Editors' rating

The good: Handsome case design; kicks-off the new generation of Windows 7-based all-in-one PCs with fast performance; decent mainstream gaming capability; solid-state hard drive speeds OS and application loading.

The bad: Occasionally unresponsive touch input; lacking higher-end multimedia features like Blu-ray and wall mounting; TV tuners are lame.

The bottom line: The Gateway One ZX6810-01 makes a strong first impression for Windows 7-based all-in-ones PCs, with fast performance and an attractive case design. Its touch input and accompanying applications fall flat, but there's enough respectable computer here that it's worth a look. Our only suggestion is that you wait to inspect the rest of the new Windows 7 crowd once they are released.
